A Last Goodbye
Hi, I haven’t lived in Wigan for a long time now and that photo brought back lots of lovely memories , I can even remember the distinctive aroma that surrounded the stall.
Was that also the stall that sold the creamy Lancashire cheese ? Best cheese in the world.
Thanks
Sad end to another era
Redmans is in Preston market hall Dennis.
So sad to see Redman's Stall go, and Thankyou, Dennis, for taking the photo. I'm sure most people know this, but for anyone who doesn't there is a film on Youtube showing the last days of trading in the OLD Market Hall over 30 years ago, showing the stalls and interviewing the stall holders we all knew so well. Just type in "Wigan Market Hall The Final Days". I am lucky enough to have it on dvd and it is brilliant to look back on.
“The last nail in the coffin”. Is there such a shop as a Butchers outside the market? Apart from Tesco that is with its pre packed meat. It’s as if Wiganers are being starved out of the town..a very sad day indeed. It’s what most people went in the market for to buy fresh food. Is it just Redman’s that’s leaving. Older people more than likely will miss that stall.
Dennis may i ask is it closing and why! it has been trading many many years it is so sad. My grandparents in the60s and70s when they was alive they used to go there every week and buy various foods from redmans.
Sue, no that wasn't Redman's that sold the Creamy Lancashire. That was The Cheese Cabin and it is still there. I have bought Creamy Lancashire from many places, including "Specialist" Cheese Shops, but NONE taste like the Creamy Lancashire from The Cheese Cabin in Wigan Market Hall. The future of all the remaining stalls is so uncertain at the moment but I don't think I will ever find a cheese to beat that one.
Redmans Red Leicester was the best ever . I can still remember the taste.
Julie it closes today. There are various reasons why it is closing .The pandemic the cost of living and no footfall to the market in general compounded by the Galleries demolition are some of the factors for its closure.
Cheese cabin is relatively new to some of the market hall stalls, I remember Redmans selling best butter and tasty Lancashire cheese cut from a big block.
I could be wrong but Redman’s will have bought all their cheeses from a supplier. If so the cheese should still be available.
There was a Cheese Cabin in the Old Market Hall when I was a girl and that's a long time ago! Perhaps it's a different "Cheese Cabin" now but it was certainly called by that name back then. I can still see the man who ran it in my mind's eye with his white grocery overall on. I remember buying Peanut Butter from there when I was only young ; It was quite a new thing then, (well, in our house anyway!). As for Redman's Stall, I will miss buying bacon ribs from there.....sometimes I roasted them in the oven and sometimes I used them to make pea-soup in the slow cooker. It will be much-missed. Glad we've got such a good photo to look back on, thanks to Dennis.
I live in Portsmouth now, but I lived in Wigan for 43 years. It is sad to see the market hall being vandalised in the name of progress or so the planners say. The same thing is happening where I live. Portsmouth was a thriving town, but it is now a ghost town full of student accommodation. Another 2 streets of shops and the general Post office is being pulled down to make way for more students.
Exactly Broady, the same goes for butchers, they all get their stock from registered suppliers.
Sorry to hear of Redmans closing. I mentioned on PAD a few years ago that I'd gone to Redmans to buy rindless back bacon - actually asked for backless bacon (newly married and clueless!). I too remember the two men who ran the Cheese Cabin - always helpful and very knowledgeable about their cheeses. The only place I can get Lancashire cheese now is Tesco and definitely not the same as the crumbly Lancashire of the Cheese Cabin.
This picture must be at least 2 weeks old as , all the equiptment as been moved and the area is vacant, but I still appreciate it and as so many say it is a very sad site now in the Market Hall
My wife buys stuff from this stall, black peas for one. Will have to look elsewhere.
It's 6 o'clock and going dark and The Market Hall will be closed. Redman's stall will be empty and silent. End of an era.
Is the iron post there to stop ram raiding wheelchair users doing a smash and grab of their amazing creamy Lancashire.
