New Cycle Lane
Photo: Mick Byrne (Panasonic DMC-TZ100)
Why couldn't that have been done before the new cycle lane was finished. Digging up newly laid footpath/cycle lane. Poor planning in my book.
Complete waste of money. Creating traffic by narrowing the roads thus increasing emissions. People now get to sit in traffic looking at empty bike lanes put in for no real reason and only used by the occasional child or older chap with a go pro
Couldn't they have lifted the kerbing and put the cable under there instead of cutting into the tarmac ?
Garry. You have no idea what might happen next. In my Somerset village we have had the same pavement dug up 5 times in 2 years with different operators putting in their fibre cables. Apparently (unlike water gas and electric supply) each fibre optic broadband company has to use their own cabling so yes we have 5 different cables outside our property, even though we don't use any of them Even the workmen doing this (different in every case) !, think this is madness. We even had one company digging up the same pavement 10 days after the last one. Perhaps you have avoided this in Wigan ?
Garry that has gone on for years. I have seen roads which have been resurfaced with tarmac and then white lined only to be dug up by the utility company within days.
I don't know when tis photo was taken but it was all clear this morning.
What makes you think that's a cycle lane? No signs, no cycle lane markings, no green tarmac.
I believe some authorities now fine contractors if they apply to reopen paving & roads within a specific time limit of having done so previously.
That's right PeterP, they never talk to each other. Sometimes I understand about water and gas leaks have to be repaired, but they never put the road back as they found it.
The real problem we have with cycle lanes, is that cyclist don't use them, money down the drain. Cyclist takes short cuts , pedal through traffic light on RED, never display front and rear lights.
I'm not saying all cyclist are the same, but the majority are. We've all seen it.
Arthur and don't forget they pedal through one way streets always ride on pavements opposite cycle lanes and don't have a warning bell to alert pedestrians. Electric scooters are has bad.
Ticsmon - my browser says it was taken on 2nd February.
There are notices on every lamppost along that stretch denoting a combined pedestrian/cycle way.
I’m prompted to wonder whether or not Arthur and Sue can actually ride a bike , and if they can , then when was the last time that they attempted to navigate Wigan without having to go the wrong way down a one way street to avoid a half mile detour riding in rush hour traffic or ride down the pavement as an alternative option ?
It’s true that a substantial number of cyclists appear to be terminal bell-ends , I come across ‘em constantly , but these
“ cycle lanes “ around Wigan are just a farce .
Half of them run for a distance of 200 yards or less before petering out. The other half can’t be used as they’re normally full of parked cars .
And the cycle gyratory at the Saddle junction must have been designed by someone attending the substance abuse clinic , as you could expect to find carol singers outside your front door when you arrived home by the the time you’d negotiated that bloody daft set-up .
My advice would be as follows :-
Chill out , do as the French do and …
“ partageons la route “.
It’s the only sensible option , and what’s more , it doesn’t cost millions .
And although I’m becoming sick and tired of saying this , I’ll say it one more time . This barmpot island of ours appears to be controlled and regulated by bleedin’ Martians .
And just one more thing Sue , it isn’t “ has bad “
It’s “ as bad “ …
“ AS bad “ … “ AS “
not bloody “ HAS “ .
I’m wondering how many more times I’ll have to point that out before I slit my wrists .
Jeez !
Ozy needs educating. One day a cyclist was heading down King St, which is indeed one way going up towards town, and By the way, what as it got to do with riding a push bike? In my opinion your comments are none sencicle.
What's has my comments got to do if I can ride a bike or not.
The law is the law. 0sy
Well , it would appear that I’m attempting to urinate into the teeth of a raging north eastern gale with this one .
It seems the education system in Wigan in the 50s and 60s has far more to answer for than their shortcomings in cycle path design .
Most of us who were educated in the 50s and 60s were never intended to be anything more than factory fodder. The fact that so many of those kids managed to do more than was expected of them says more about their spirit than it does about the education system of that time.
Ozy wants to be a Teacher.
Superb Dtease!!
Best post I have read on WW!
I don’t deny that DTease but we’ve got a bloke here asking “ what as it got to do with riding a push bike ? “ when the topic under discussion is cycle lanes.
And from what I’ve seen of your posts over the months Alan , I wouldn’t care to accept you as a pupil to be honest , as I do possess the capability to recognise the limit of my own ability .
I would disagree regarding the education received in the 50’s it may have been very basic but we left school being able to spell correctly ( well some of us) and also being able to reckon up without a calculator. If you happen to go on F/B the spelling on some of the posts are absolutely diabolical…That’s the young high flyers for you…with all the education at their finger tips.
Arthur it’s ‘nonsensical’ .
DTease, applause to you, best post and intelligent, my kind of man.
0SY...HGVs bep bep.....brum brum. ENGINE OIL, GREASE DIRT .
Love your post to Alan xx
OZY: don't know your name. Why be so ignorant to people who have made some basics spelling mistakes. They still put their messages across perfectly that most Wigan Worlders understand.
I personally would much prefer to look and read Mick's post than smelley diesel Lorries throwing dangerous exhaust fumes out in the air. I can understand Arthur's, Alan's and Sue's reactions to your unessersery comments, I prefer to look at some Daffodils out in the park than a drum of swarfega.
By the way, my spelling is far from perfect.
Everyone on here sometimes or other HAVE made some spelling mistakes, doesn't matter who they are.
That's correct Alan, if I were to look back over the weeks and months on Wigan World/ Photo a day, I'm almost certain I'll find some spelling mistakes on the posts, to the folk who think they are perfect and who do nothing wrong. At my age, I do struggle with some words, but try to get by.
What Arthur simply is saying, he doesn't ride a bike, but he sees bike riders breaking the Law.
And yes many riders do ride through lights showing red, riding on the pavement with no care for pedestrians and riding up or down one way streets. All against the law. So Arthur, I fully agree with you and understand your words perfectly. Malc.
Yeah ! … you got that last bit right Sandra ,…
and no danger .
Love it Sandra.
Yeah: You got everything in your post right Sandra...
Malc, you are absolutely right.
Cycle lanes are really a good idea and safe for riders. But will they use them ???
Most bike riders are a Law to themselves.
