The Pond
More like a puddle to me
I bet many a cow has drunk from this pond. But looking at the angle of the photo the bank looks steep. Nice to see an oasis partly surrounded by trees and I should imagine it is a nice stroll around to blow the cobwebs off after a busy day stuck indoors
This is the place for trees, au naturel.
I bet there will be ice on that pond this morning, my fish pond frozen over.
Another lovely photo with the darks and lights
and delicate shades of blues and greens. Is it any wonder we need to bring some nature in amongst the ugly concrete pavements in towns ..
If you jump in this "Puddle" it will definitely come over the top of your Wellies Derek.
Well now you have said that Dennis, I know its not ' dew ' pond as they are shallow & usually in a field.
Good pic, its as if you just came across it in your wandering.
Why would the farmer erect a little fence next to the pond.
I remember being told as a child that ponds like this were old mine shafts .
For years I believed they were all connected and if you dived into one using scuba gear you could surface in another miles away .
A nice photo. I can well imagine a child seeing this as "a secret place".
Ice on the canal this morning
Was this one of your secret places Irene in your plantation courting days.
Tom farmers extent the fence into the water to stop cows getting from one field to another. If the fence only went to the waters edge then the cows would go round the fence post and end up in the wrong field which may have a crop in it . If the fence is extended into the water then the cows would get to the water to drink but would not go into the water to get round the fence. It does work ask any farmer
Lovely photo.
Mick, I didn't go "courting" in The Plantations. My remark was an innocent one about a child seeing the pond as a "secret place". I went through The Plantations to Haigh Hall many times but it was with my parents. I went out "courting" around Ince and Hindley with my husband when I was 15, got engaged at 18, married at 21, had my son when I was 24 and my daughter when I was 28, and it will be my Golden Wedding in 2024. I hope you are happy with that information .....my life in a nutshell, with no cause for snidy personal remarks.
Irene, I was talking to a man a few years ago who was asking people to sign a petition about a new gate the hotel people had put in, and he was telling me that he knew you.
Cant remember his name now but he said he lived close to the hall.
It will be our golden wedding in 2026.
Before I read anything, I knew this was Haigh, and I knew it was one of you're photos Dennis.Lovely.
