I just can’t imagine what it’s going to be like… but I do think what a waste to demolish new buildings.

Its going to be lovely and modern, I was talking to one of the workmen and he said it might look like theirs nothing going on at the moment, but there is plenty happening on the inside like removing the dangerous asbestos.

It's a damn outrage that they got rid of the old Market Hall in the first place....I don't know how most people on here feel, but to my mind, everything was much better in the old days.....

Well Mick, or Wigan Mick, those buildings in the photo look pretty modern to me as they are.....has anyone seen the plans of whats going up in their place...the plans should be on public view....by law. I expect the new buildings will be ULTRA MODERN.... LOL !

I agree, Gareth. I can't see what "lovely and modern" helps a town where no-one visits any more. What on earth is the point of all this? It has lost its heart and its soul.

Mick, you talk as though you've been hoodwinked by a town planner?
I remember that was just how the council talked in the late 1960s when the plans for Marketgate were being discussed and again in the late 1970s and early 1980s when the plans were out for this new Market Hall and Galleries shopping centre. The town planners were out strutting their stuff around the town centre and they too were adamant that the newly built centre would be all lovely, clean and modern, what they failed to say it would be for 33 years only.

A question Mick, how long will it be before your vision of the new town centre being lovely and modern shall also be considered as being faded and not practicable and up for demolition? Trouble with modern stuff now it soon ages and becomes obsolete and run-down even after just a few years.

You are so right Gareth.

An absolute disgrace, to demolish the galleries a building so full of character (Wigan Council ruined the Galleries when they built the grand arcade)what town the size of Wigan needs two Large shopping malls

It’s all so different as to when I used to collect the waste at Scrivens slaughterhouse and the Bobby used to stand at the top directing traffic, nothing will ever stay the same.
