St Elizabeths
Always looks to me like the builders could make their minds up on what shape to build this church,
Whenever we pass here, I always notice how many colourful fresh flowers are on the graves, which are obviously well-looked-after, and I love the old ornate railings that surround the churchyard.
St Elizabeth's is my family church.
A good job was done a few year's ago when it was pointed and cleaned.
The main door is on the south side where the land slopes into the middle part of the graveyard, overlooking Hindley and the Wutchie.
My dad thought that in the height of summer it was always windy by the door.
Lovely photo Dennis. Dennis may i ask you with you living nearby has the scrumptious coffee shop at the fingerpost shut down. When i go past on a saturday afteroon it is always closed.
As far has I know, Julie the Cafe has closed. It’s a shame really because it was very popular.
Mick - it does align east/west and should have had a north and south transept (seen as a cross from the air) but the money ran out. The south transept was built and is visible in the photo, but on the north side it is flat, and makes the structure look a bit lop sided.
I have always noticed the name of this church when doing family history with Lancashire Parish Clerks Online.
Neat church built in the Victorian era by the looks of it. Its a compact & clear image, thanks Dennis.
I would say this is a quirky building with loads of room for church socials and a tea/coffee room after church services.. No need to make room at the back of the church to integrate a kitchen cum cafe. A good all rounder village church. Well looked after…..I have missed the 715 from Bolton to Wigan that passes by. I did hear the bus was being put back…still no sign.
Gary, i assume all church 'main doors' face south.
One or two interesting facts.... Graveyards face east with the occupants buried with their feet facing east towards the rising sun, that is, except the clergy, who i think are buried feet facing the church to assume a position of still attending their flock. Also when the clergy are taken into a church in their coffin for the burial service they are carried in head first for the same reason. I don't think the Queen was allowed that privilege. I have no doubt that our 'own' Reverend, David Long will correct me if i'm wrong.
Here endeth the lesson.
Hello Roy
Some churches, due to restricted site, align north/south, so that the chancel and altar are described as "liturgical east" even though they are in the north. We have one here in the North East, but the classic is Coventry Cathedral, Basil Spence architect, sited north /south so that the fired ruins of the old church (Luftwaffe raid November 1940) could be incorporated into the design.
Coventry, like other similarly sited churches, has no east window (no sun) and a Graham Sutherland tapestry was placed there instead.,
What Roy has posted is not true.
St. Elizabeths is one of the nicest church's in the area, a lot of work was carried out a few years ago.
A lot of my relatives are buried in this churchyard, including maternal grandparents and my late Mum.I visit quite often,it is well kept .The church is beautiful inside and has stunning features, including red glass incense burners.x
With regards to Truly Scrumptious, I have been told there is a problem with the lease,so while that is sorted it is (temporarily ?) closed.
