Market Place
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-WX500)
I remember seeing double-deck buses driving up and down that road. It certainly looks better now than it did in my day.
Dennis, it does. But! As you said, "...some appeal when the sun shines."
Once upon a time, there would be more people than seen here on a rainy day.
Hopefully, there will be a return to those busy shopping days in Wigan town centre. But, at the moment, I cannot see it happening.
Only a shame it hasn't got any shops to go with the appeal, Dennis!
Good pic all the same.
This is not the wigan town centre that i used to remember years ago! its so horrible now and run down. I feel so angry how it has become, all that is left is coffee shops that it is no use to anyone. I would not go there anymore theres nothing to go for all of the famous stores have gone.
Appeal, if you like the stink of foreign cigs coming from Starbucks outside seating area.
I remember Wigan when they had lovely hanging baskets draped from that pole, has somebody pinched them or have they been removed because of health and safety.
Market Place does look attractive on the photo and is probably the best part of Wigan now, visually. Once you get to the bottom of The Makinson Arcade it is just depressing.
I went to town yesterday and the place was alive with shoppers,it was so nice to see..just like old times.
No men are wearing those black pumps with white sole trim today, they must have sold out of them.
A sad sight to see, the town centre with the majority of shops boarded up except Coffee shops and Betting shops, one thing's for sure is that when poverty rises then the profits at the Bookies soon follow.
The flowering baskets probably removed by health & safety Mick, like how they've begun to put barriers around the flower tubs, they'll be putting sleeping policemen humps along pavements next to deter disabled scooter riders from speeding.
It still is a grand looking town with some superb buildings, so I'm sure there'll soon be a lot of improvement to this downturn in Wigan centre.
This is probably the most recognisable sight in Wigan mainly because of the Parish Church and the mock Tudor rendering. But it’s so sad that the main big stores have gone…it’s heart wrenching really… I feel sometimes there’s no need to come here, but I still come once a week…. Why ? Because it’s in my DNA , no other reason.
