Photo-a-Day (Wednesday, 17th August, 2022)
Bryn
I was brought up in Bryn so I like this photo
I worked in Bryn about 5 or 6 years ago and haven't seen it since . Things I recognise are the Co-op car car park with the slope that was so hazardous on an icy winter day . The garage opposite. The white building was a post office and a travel agency . Across the entry a sandwich shop . An off-licence . Mr.English fish and chips . There was a vet and a ladies hairdressers.
What is different is the land where the electric pylon is , which was ploughed farm land and the tree cover wasn't so dense as it looks now .
An interesting picture Roy . Thanks
Just trying to get my bearings. I don't know Bryn very well, even though I live quite near to it, in Abram. I know the row of shops mentioned by Poet, with Mr. English Fish and Chips, the vet and the hairdressers, having passed it a few times in the car, but just can't find it on the photo. Is that it, centre front, Poet?
Yes Irene, in the centre of the picture ( just to left of the white building with the extension ) you see the rear of the shops mentioned . The red wheelie bin is the back of the chippy .
Where the row curves round to left is the vet with the road going down toward The 3 Sisters.
Thanks Poet. I had a feeling I was in the right place but I thought I was looking at the front of the shops, not the rear, Got it now!
We lived there from 1960 to 1966, this is an excellent photo, but I can't work things out, we were not far from the railway station.
Fred in the centre of the photo is a white building which was the post office. To the left are the building which hold a tattooist chippy betting shop vets hairdressers and a kitchen shop. Continue left looking over the trees there is a brown gable end building with a white back this was the dentist on DG road (now in the new build on the other side)of the road. to the extreme left are the back of the shops on Wigan road ATC taxis florist chippy and what was two pie shops long gone
Fred, if you look to the left of the photo, you'll see a red gable end of a terrace. That house is on Downall Green Road, close to Bryn Cross. Bryn Road is hidden by those trees to the left of the photo.
Wigan Road goes left to right, middle of phoro.
Bryn station is about 200 yards from the left edge of the photo.
Thanks Peter and Bruce, I have now got my bearings, our house is quite away off, it was on Wigan Rd, and in between the station and what was a Labour club when we were there, on the Ashton side of the station.
