Photo-a-Day (Tuesday, 7th June, 2022)
Crawford Street
Lancashire Constabulary at the top Magistrates Court at the bottom.
Twenty odd years ago I was travelling up the M6 from a three day course in Birmingham and came off to look at Wigan - for the first time in twenty years before that. Came through Pemberton, most of which seemed to have disappeared in favour of DIY stores and industrial parks. Drove exactly here, on this photo, and tried to park, at a meter, where the furthest car is standing.
I had two pound coins in my pocket, neither of which would go into the meter - kept clattering through. A parking warden was watching me near the street sign. After 5 minutes I gave up and drove on.. It was another three years before I saw the "new" Wigan.
Good photo Dennis - of a very familiar Wigan sight.
Gary, there is nothing more frustrating than finding a parking space only to discover that the blasted machine won’t accept your coins. The funny thing is you keep putting the same coin in over and over expecting a different result!
Excellent, Dennis. All you need to know about Crawford street.
An imposing street - Church at the top and law and justice on the left, or used to be. I believe there’s a ‘theatre’ of sorts these days at bottom left.
The Old Courts concert room Veronica. Two of the greatest musicians in England played there a week or two ago , Martin Simpson and Andy Cutting .
Wigan Old Courts as it's now called Veronica. I've been to a few ' gigs ' in there, have to say it was a good night. Good representative photo Dennis. It's a pity someone didn't do something similar with the Grand, just around the corner.
LINMA, County Courts at the bottom, my son and his future wife met in there 30 years ago, working there, not appearing, lol.
Nice clear shot Dennis
Really good photo Dennis, many years since I went into this street, not always with good reason I may add - but !!!. Sorry didn't comment on your question about Dave's tractor but yes, I remember it well, its a wonder we have reached the age we have isn't it ?, thinking about all those risky things we did.
Thanks for the info both Poet and Standisher. Roy I worked there for 12 months in 1991 after finishing a course at BIHE. There was a young lad and girl who were ‘courting’ (Don’t think that term is used now.) I have a photograph from that time with some of the staff on it… I may post it sometime. Not sure if it’s allowed though… Official Secrets and all that. Mmm. The young fellow is on it …
Hi Veronica, it was more than likely them, David and Andrea were their Christian names if that helps.
Yes I think his name was David. He was a tall dark haired lad with a very cheery face. I seem to remember when post was being opened the talk was football, football and more football! His girlfriend isn’t on the photo. Four ladies and the young chap. My son is called David and he’s worked at the Bolton Court since he was 18. He’s ready for retiring in 3 years. ;o)).
Ps There was another young lad the same age they seemed to pal on with one another though. So it could be him - but he’s not on the photo. Where has the time gone ? It doesn’t seem so long ago, they were a nice bunch of people then.
Veronica, that's my boy, you've described him spot on, even to the football chatter !! They ended up having triplets, 2 boys and a girl.
Very nice photo Dennis, on a lovely sunny day. Speaking of courts Veronica, I was once on a jury at Bolton Crown Court, you're son would have been there then.It was a very daunting experience, and it went on right up to Christmas eve.
Goodness me triplets! They would have had their work cut out! And all help would have been well received then Roy.
I take it they will be in their 20s now!
Yes Edna he may have been there then… it can be a harrowing job … not that he talks about what goes on. Some terrible cases.
You’re right Veronica some dreadful cases. I worked in CID on the second floor and we saw some funny things on the grass opposite. A tramp would sit on the grass, take his shirt off and delouse it. He always sat with his legs open and because he had a big hole in his trousers everything he possessed used to fall out. Lovely. Another tramp used to go into one of the rubbish bins for some newspaper and go into the bushes, emerged with the ‘dirty’ paper and put it into the bin (bless him he did move the rubbish) and then started to eat his breakfast. Incidentally we did manage to do our work!
I can remember looking out of those big windows Linma , Especially when it was nearly time to go home… The tramps would have been oblivious to the audience - I bet it put you all off your
kit-kats though! ;o)) …
Linma, if I was that tramp these days my “possessions” would probably limp out rather than fall out, still, as my old grandad was fond of saying “Tha con only play the cards tha dealt wi owd lad”
Yes Veronica, very hard work, it's bad enough getting up in the middle of the night seeing to one never mind three. A lot of help was provided during the day but not at 3 or 4am, lol. They are 20, D and A spent a lot of time 'seeing the world' before they were born.
Apologies to Dennis for using his P a D as a message board.
Good for them Roy…
Just be thankful Dtease you didn’t have to go in the bushes! :o))
sorry Dennis.
Well done Dtease you made me smile and 10 out of 10 for being honest.
