I felt quite cheerful when I got up this morning, but after looking at this I think I’ll just go back to bed.

When I left Debenhams to have my son I did a pen-and-ink sketch of this scene for my boss as a gift.....the buildings were then old and derelict. A few years later when my son and daughter were at school. the area had been done-up and made into a museum and the staff, children and a few Mums from Abram school went to visit it. We dressed in Victorian clothes and it was very lively and enjoyable. There were boat-rides for the children and picnic areas. Now, sadly, it looks very much as it did on my sketch, and the prone figure, (although I realise that has been done by human hands), seems to sum up its demise, and that of Wigan in general.

Is it Wigan Council or Canal and Rivers Trust?

Comment by: Veronica on 2nd May 2022 at 12:02

What sad lives the hoodlums lead to get their kicks by destroying whatever takes their fancy. They couldn’t even finish the job though, as their intention was to throw that sculpture in the canal. Whoever is responsible I hope they break their arms or legs….

Comment by: Cyril on 2nd May 2022 at 12:10

I can see a chain next to the feet of the statue so is it chained to the wall and why whoever did this couldn't pick it up and walk away with it, but whatever goes through someone's mind to do this anyway, and with the Way We Were, Wigan Pier and Opie Museum attractions now gone shall these statues etc, be replaced when they get damaged?

Comment by: John G on 2nd May 2022 at 13:01

Yes Veronica, and they don’t need come running to you when they do break their arms and legs.

Comment by: Poet on 2nd May 2022 at 21:46

It's good the council are promoting Wigan' s entry into this year's ski jump championship .

Comment by: . Ozy . on 2nd May 2022 at 22:06

If I could just add my two penn'orth.

In my view, the true criminals are the faceless, nameless decision makers who commissioned this monstrosity to be sculpted, cast, or whatever in the first place.
It's that far, I doubt very much if Calderbanks would even accept it for scrap.
Or allow me put it this way..... If it was in my front garden, I'd keep my curtains permanently drawn....or fasten a black bin liner over it...or most likely both.

Lordy!, I thought the statue dedicated to Fred Dibnah in Bolton was ugly, but this one deserves to be under at least four foot of water,....if not more....along with the other one 200 yards farther along the towpath.

And I hesitate to even mention the stainless steel abortion near ......." believe " square.
..........oh! wait..........I do " believe " that I may have just mentioned it.

So witness what species of garbage your illustrious councillors choose to spend your hard earned council tax payments on people.......then weep.

And we've been invited to vote for them again later month....my ar$e.

Having had plenty practice as a young man, I can tell you that is the perfect position to take over the great white telephone when ridding the body of an excess of bitter and curry following a Saturday night of over indulgence.

Comment by: Eddie the Eagle on 3rd May 2022 at 08:23

I believe her last jump was only a yard short of the opposite bank .
