The sun highlights the church. Better than rain or even snow. I bet a lot of people going into Wigan never go past the church myself being one of them. It must be over 20years since I walked past the church. I have walked along most of the streets around the church but have never needed to cut across the front of the church and stand back and really look at the beauty of the church.

A beautiful photograph the parish church look,s splendid in the sunlight what detail. When we were young we would play in what we called the little park on our way back from the big park Mains Park.

Winter sun in a cold blue sky can be harsh and dazzling but here it butters the sandstone in soft light . I like the shadows of the pinnacles on the terracotta gable .

Lovely pic.The church is absolutely beautiful inside.

Peter. I well remember in the 1960s when the Parish Church was stone cleaned and it went from dark black (from soot etc)etc) to the present yellow stone condition. Many other building were dine at the same time. It may sound heresy but I am still in two minds as to which colour I prefer as there was a certain grandeur to the "dark" buildings especially churches and town halls etc. I certainly don't miss the air pollution though.

Wigan Parish Church is glorious in its splendour - beautiful photograph Dennis - thank you.

It's a lovely photo of the Parish Church, I love how the sun has turned the old stones a soft honey colour. I like hearing the bells ringing - reminds me of home, they could be heard from where I used to live. They will probably be ringing at New Year.

What a beautiful line ,
‘butters the sandstone ‘
The art of a true poet just drips off the quill ..

Beautiful photo of a beautiful church.I never realised until I did family history it’s real name is All Saints Church.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th December 2021 at 17:17

Not only the Parish Church but all the Catholic Churches come under the Liverpool Diocese.
In Westhoughton it's the Salford Diocese.

Comment by: Veronica on 28th December 2021 at 20:19

All Saints School must have been attached to the church.

Comment by: The Real James Hanson on 28th December 2021 at 20:47

Veronica, the ROMAN Catholic Churches are in the Archdiocese of Liverpool, which is different to the Diocese. The Anglican Catholic Churches, like the Parish Church, are in the Diocese of Liverpool along with the Protestant Churches. All Diocese churches are Church of England.

I can hear these church bells every Mon night in my back garden, when they are practicing the bell ringing Especially when I'm gardening in summer. Its lovely.Very nice photo Dennis.

GEORGE.
Not sure if you know or not, St Peter's, Hindley comes under the Liverpool Diocese as well.
St Wilfrid's, Standish, is under the Blackburn Diocese.

James we Catholics in W/h are in the Diocese of Salford. Wigan is in the Arch Diocese of L'Pool. The L'pool Anglicans are in the Diocese of Liverpool. The Catholics in Salford are in the Province of L'pool and Liverpool is their Metropolitan . From an excellent authority . We always say Diocese of Salford for our Church which is RC.

Comment by: The Real James Hanson on 29th December 2021 at 00:04

Veronica, an Archdiocese has to have an Archbishop and Salford hasn’t got one. Liverpool has.
Also, Roman Catholics are not the same as Anglican Catholics. Roman Catholics in Salford Dioces might be under Liverpool ARCH diocese. Anglican Catholics in Salford are not. They aren’t in the same ‘club’. It’s all to do with control of the masses. Like dividing political voters into wards.
Deanery of Wigan, Deaconry of Warrington, Diocese of Liverpool, Archdiocese of here or there, Control, Power, Money.

Look up Bishop John Arnold of Salford Diocese he is 'our' 11 th Bishop for the Bolton area (not Arch Bishop).
James I am aware of the difference between the RC 's and the Anglicans. I am a baptised Catholic
( practicing) . However the Parish Church in
( St Bartholomew's) W/H is High Anglican. We have good links with them as well. I know all about differences which I am not prepared to go into on here.
Regards Veronica

I do agree the Arch Diocese is senior in a province and has an Arch Bishop . The other Dioceses are just a Diocese and has a Bishop. It's too early in a morning for discussions on the Church James , for me anyway!

Pps. Rest in Peace Desmond Tutu, ( just call me Arch!) what a grand man...
