How strange! I was lying awake in the early hours, my mind rambling form one thing to another, and the world "Alchemist" came into my head for no apparent reason. I got quite a shock when I looked a t p-a-d. That's quite spooky!

Marina . Plank lane Marina . What are these strange enchantments that start whenever you're near ?

Poet, that made me laugh!! (And yes....I did "sing" it!).

I think Mick has names for everywhere.

It IS Plank Lane Marina, Terry W....(or "Plonk Lone" as it's known locally).

Irene I used to get funny dreams when I had cheese and piccalilli butties for my supper.
Just down the road from Plank lane bridge is a very good chippy, and when I was out on another adventure a few years ago I went in and bought chips pudding and gravy, I left it wrapped and fastened it to my bike rack with one of the elastic strap
I started to pedal down the road looking for a nice place to sit down and eat them, when I noticed a lad walking diagonally across the road in front of me, he came very close but I just thought he was playing silly buggers.
But when I stopped to sit down to eat them I found that my dinner had gone and the elastic strap hanging loose, the bugger had pinched them.

I know the chippy but have never been in, Mick, and I'm glad you said "dinner" instead of "lunch". It drives me potty that people in Wigan have altered their speech in recent years from the speech they used in childhood, as if they are ashamed of being from Lancashire.

Chips, pudding un gravy! I bet he thowt it wer his birthday Mick

If it's the chippy I think you are on about Mick, then the lad probably did you a favour, though it was twenty odd years ago the last I saw it and it looked very grotty from the outside, though all the buildings around there looked grotty back then and full of pit dust.

where is Plank Lane

Irene I had just rode back from Manchester so it was late afternoon and my dinnertime, I don't think the thief went for it because it was chips pudding and gravy, I think he went for it because it was a package, maybe he was thinking I was on my way to the post office to post it.

Annemarie go down Bickershaw lane and go over the canal the Marina is on your right and then there are new/old houses just past these this is Plank Lane

Thankyou I know the maruna at lower addlington but never knew about this one

Comment by: Cyril on 14th December 2021 at 15:27

Annemarie, you can either go along Slag Lane from Lowton or down Firs Lane from Leigh both these routes will bring you to Plank Lane where Bickershaw Colliery was, there are some photos to scroll through in the following link of what the area looked like when the colliery was still in operation: https://leigh.life/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=31300

Had a look on google maps of an image of Plank Lane chippy and it's a lot different from the last time I saw it in the mid 1990s, it now looks clean, open and inviting and not at all as I remember it.
