Also once the home of Alan Latham the TV wrestler wasn't it Dennis ?. A beautiful building in one of the nicest settings around the Wigan district, as a much younger person loved walking along the road past this building and then up to Haigh. Once again Dennis, a really good photo, thanks for the memory.

Hi Walter yes your correct, I worked for Alan many times at his house, joinery repairs for the company I worked for.
Really nice chap, but he was a perfectionist ,job had to right.
We replaced the main entrance doors , rear doors etc and driveway gates behind the metal gates.
Hope your keeping well Walter. all the best David.
Its still in the Latham family,

Good photo Dennis ,looked a cold day for this one.
Worked at the late Alan Latham , (wrestler ) house many times doing joinery repairs .
It was just an empty shell of a building, in a awful state when he bought it, must have been in the late 60s early 70s.
The company I started work for Jack Almond joiners in 1974, they had done the roof , and major repairs ,before I started for them, so not sure ,of exact date.

Looks very refined... a 'noble' place to live. Must have a very good Parish Council ( tongue in cheek) it could be a couple of centuries ago with that setting and no one about and no cars or old bikes lying about.

Ive pedaled past this house loads of times, and Ive never seen anybody going in or out, the place always looks dead and empty to me.

Mick, the point is wether you like the photo, are you interested in it at all ? Not that you have never seen anyone going in or out of it on your travels.

Nice picture Dennis

any comment about the picture, Mick?

Comment by: Broady on 8th December 2021 at 13:53

Did Alan Latham have something to do with one armed bandits? Riley and Sullivan maybe.

Comment by: Cyril on 8th December 2021 at 14:07

It is a grand building, but I can imagine that they would have spent a fortune on securing it to deter intruders and robbers.

Anyone heard anything else about the council's proposals to revamp the old children's zoo and the greenhouses site that is behind this house?

Comment by: walt (nth Yorkshire) on 8th December 2021 at 16:36

David good to hear from you, we are all doing fine over here and I trust you and yours are also. Broady, yes, he did have involvements with one arm bandits as you call them, I thing he wrestled under the name of Francis Sullivan. great entertainer in his day.

I knew a lad who bought some football game machines, and he put one into the Silverwell pub with the landlords permission.
But it got smashed up, and when he went back asking the landlord who had done, he was beaten up at the back of the pub when he left
The police said it would more than likely be these salt of the earth Wigan wrestlers who didnt like him setting up in their patch.

Mick you really do walk a fine line, try just enjoying the photo and good comments, it's much less depressive.

What a lovely wintry photograph. That is an elegant building - timeless architecture. Again, nature provides the stunning backdrop to set it off.
A good Christmas feel to it Dennis, thank you.

A nice wintery scene :)

Mick - grow up.

Mick maybe you could have used what little education you have had to compose something complimentary for this beautifully proportioned building.

When I worked in Horwich we used to go in RMI club every dinner time for a pint and every pay day one bloke would pour his money into a fruit machine. One day Francis Sullivan came in and fiddled with the machine and let the bloke drop a lot of money. He then told the bloke that he could never win in the long run.Sullivan seemed a fair bloke.Riley and Sullivan used to have very smart bouncers in the Monaco in Hindley in the 60/70's .They were friendly blokes and do not recall any trouble.
