Royal Arcade
two tone records
What a contrast to yesterdays PAD.
This arcade has got some style......of course it was built back in the days when buildings etc were designed to impress.
Really good pic David.
I really hope this old and historical Arcade isn't affected by all the plans that are afoot... it's certainly one of the nicer ones.
I love The Royal Arcade. It has had some really nice shops in there through the years.
I remember once walking in the arcade wearing my hush puppies crepe sole loafers and slipping on those smooth black and white tiles and ending up on the floor.
Goodness Mick, you are bundle of mishaps ....watch where you are going & keep safe today !
Mick did you bang your head? maybe that's why you have a personality issue
Didn’t they call them shoes “Brothel creepers” Mick?
Pity you didn’t take a picture when you went a—e over elbow.
I remember the coffee shop where you could get beans or have them ground. They had so many lovely flavours.
Mick, how is it something always happens to you?
Oh, nice picture David.
i have stopped using google for information about anything concerning wigan i just look at micks comments on photo-a-day .always has negative comments he never praises anyone but loves it when people like his pics
Nearly closing time, is this to go under the town centre re-build too, I've heard the former Market Hotel is to go. I can't see why a perfectly good building with character and recently converted into flats has to be demolished, to make way for a characterless building with flats to be built in its place.
Mick, did you know where the name Hush Puppies came from, I didn't,
Hush Puppies - Name came from the slavery times in the Deep South … Slaves use to throw corn meal out to distract the hounds from tracking them. The hounds stopped barking and tracking thanks to the corn meal which later adapted the name "hush puppies".
Great what you can find out on Google.
Yes Cyril, The Market Hotel is going, to the dread of the people who have just refurbished it.Also Home Bargins last day is Christmas eve. Then in Jan. The bulldozers come in!!
Will B and M Stores still be open, does anyone know, please? In the building that used to be British Home Stores?
I didnt know that Cyril
Irene B&M will be closed down and the building refurbish and they are hoping a upmarket supermarket will move in.
I hope its a Booths are a Waitrose
In your dreams, Syd - both companies could have come to posh Standish - but left it to Lidl and Aldi.... You might get a big Home Bargains, if you're lucky.
why is standish posh last time i was there nothing but housing estates nothing green left
I worked for a coffee company here in Melbourne and loved my fresh ground coffee. When in Wigan I would get my coffee from that coffee shop Annmarie
I would also add rev there is no charity in your last remark.Just a person full of pride
annemarie - I’m a scouser. We do irony.
I hope Booths doesn't come to Wigan, far more expensive than M&S and not as good. There's one in Windermere they seem to be in touristy parts of the country and Wigan is definitely not a touristy place. I think Waitrose is far too posh for Wigan, although I have never been inside one of their stores, it would make a nice change.
There is a Booths in Chorley Veronica and they are exspensive. They also have a M and S as well as a working market.Maybe they have a better council.
David the coffee shop is no longer there but it was a lovely shop.
I think an investigation into the 'doings' of WMC could do with taking place....they seem to waste money on changes that never work ! Doubt that they would get away with things so easily elsewhere.
No wonder Wiganers go to Chorley - sounds like an ideal place to go. I haven't been there for years. Limited in not driving anymore. Surprised about Booths AnneMarie.
It has been there years at the top of the flat iron .If you get to wigan bus station there is an arriva bus takes you.It is via Standish ect and is a bit long but they have some nice shops and as I said Mand S and Booths at each end of the flat iron
there is no doubt that Chorley centre is much better than Wigan, more shops, weekly market, free or low cost parking bus station next to shopping areas etc. Wigan clowncil are a waste of space.
That’s it , blame the Council once again . We are creating a species of human who need someone else to think for them . It is then a case , just blame them and take any responsibility away from me . People in other parts take action ,
Themselves , to change things . They don’t just moan on forums they write to MP ‘s , go on protest marches . Here they just moan and do nothing
David, you'd be very surprised at the number of Wiganers who use Waitrose for online home delivery groceries, though as you say they Waitrose wouldn't or maybe that should be couldn't open a store in Wigan centre, because where could they open a store and be allowed a car park for their customers to park for free.
I didn't know the coffee shop had gone :(
