College Avenue
College Avenue, and it looks very clean and not like the last time I went past it, then it was quite filthy with wafts of urine drifting from it and more than likely vomit too.
Well I was born and bred in Wigan but I have never noticed this very narrow street.
I like those quirky little alleyways of Wigan. I used to get off the bus in King Street and nip up here to the library before having a look round Wigan. There doesn't feel as if there is much worth going to Wigan for these days,.
Irene is right, little reason to visit Wigan nowadays and spending millions on a new town centre and apartments isn't going to change that. Luckily for me there are regular buses to Chorley which is a pleasure to visit.
This has been cleaned up a lot since I last saw it. Your right Irene, there is nothing to go to Wigan for, and soon there won't be a post office.
Makes a change seeing this little street clear of muck and filth.
I remember a friend saying a while back - "I'll not say I was out early this morning, but i was in Wigan before last night's blood and vomit had dried on the pavements."
Unpleasant but true.
The Wigan council workers do a splendid job in keep our streets clean.
Last year there was a lot of complaints about people being fined for dropping cig butts, but not now, maybe its because the dirty cig but droppers stopped.
Not one of usual ones mick, your not moaning about it.
Victoria Buildings on the left, offices used by Post Office telephones maintenance and installation departments in the late 60's and 70's.
A fine building and worth preserving as is a lot of King St.
aye bill, but if this council gets its own way,it will kill the centre of wigan.imo
It does look clean and tidy. I must admit I used to love all the little quirky alleyways around Wigan - there's still a few if you go and look for them.
Is there anyone except Maureen remembers another alleyway, Wilgoose Lane, also known by another name which i won't print as it would probably give the game away ?

Hello Roy..yes and it played quite a big part of my growing up as well..and I'm sure our Michaels photo on 'People'is taken there as well..xx
Looked it up on Google and saw Maureen's comment for the nickname of Wilgoose Lane but I have to admit I have never heard of it Roy.
Pw, I think Roy could give a better explanation as to why it was called ‘The Ropewalk’ than I can.
Thank you, JH, Maureen and PW.
Locally known as The Ropewalk.
Can't see Michael there amongst your family photos Maureen, but there is one photo of Wilgoose Lane on Street Scenes taken about 1958.
Roy..it's on Wigan Album..'People'.in fact there's a couple of him on there.
Roy, the Ropewalk photo with our Michael on is on the same page as the one of him and his mate in Blackpool..you commented on that one where I'd put the wrong date on lol.
Thank you Maureen.
There are several 'Ropewalks' in the country, wherever there's a rope works there's a ropewalk, it's a long straight narrow lane where the strands of rope are laid out before being twisted into a rope.
Thank you Roy,it’s been nice ‘talking’ to you.
Same here Maureen, thank you.
I remember Mansleys rope works in Leigh just over Leigh Bridge,it was a long building at the side of the canal. It burned down in the 80's or 90's,wonder if that had a Ropewalk.
Looked on Google,Mansleys had a ropewalk,it was 170 yards long at the side of the canal. It burned down in 1982 and I remember the fire ,time flies by.
