Enfield St must be the longest street of terraced houses in Wigan, its in sunshine on this photo but it must have been a proper miserable walk home from the pub on a dark wet windy night.

Mick have you never been to Barnsley St, Hodges St. or Gidlow Lane?

I bet this street was buzzing when Northern Counties was in full swing. A good follow on photo from yesterday's Pem Station submission. Mick, regarding walking back from the pub in the dark and rain, has it ever bothered you having a wobble home after a good night out whatever the weather is doing ?. Turning out yes, not good, coming home after a few scoops, Nae botha. The Plough isn't that far away for you anyway, a 2 minute wobble at the most

I must have passed this street many times in the distant past of childhood on the bus to Pemberton. Just wondering which church it is on the left. The photo 'screams' Wigan ... I can't believe those terraced houses have been left alone... I bet the cobbles are still there under the tarmac.

Fred, Barnsley st and Hodges St don't have any pubs to walk home from and Gidlow lane is on a hill and a bend so you cant see the end when you start walking.

The post office was/is on the right of the picture, and further up there was a lovely little bakery. Across the road at the junction leading up to Triangle Valve, there was a shop selling fresh fruit and veg and fresh. I remember going in and asking for 'fanny haddie' - hadn't quite got a grip of the Lancashire accent.

Was down there yesterday. Needed tyres fitted. Got more than tyres, the present owner gave me the history and pictures of the garage starting from 1901.

I think Great George St is the longest one in Wigan.

I'm not familiar with this side of Enfield St.Where does the road lead to coming out from this end?

Good grief Standisher! If the Shevington Anti-Chav Squad caught Mick wobbling home from the pub, they would have him in handcuffs and on his way over the border before you could shout “ Last orders please”.

Edna…. Turn right out of Enfield street just here will bring you onto Billinge road (A571) quite close to Saint Matthews church.

Dtease you have been told not to mention S for SH----. It's against the rules according to M for M---. I bet he hasn't wobbled on his bike down there.

Another good photo, Dennis. I remember Enfield St well and it's nice to see pics of Pemberton and area.

Mick, there's not one soul to be seen walking along there in the photo, though you hardly see anyone walking anywhere now, even a lot of school children get taken and picked up by car. Though it wasn't too bad walking along there at one time as besides this pub there was another pub and a club too.

Veronica, it's a Methodist church and they must have owned the street next to it as it's named Wesley Street.

Edna, if you went followed the road down from the right of the photo you would come to Robin (Alexandra) park, which on a previous post you mentioned you've been to.

Walked up and down here every day when I went to St Mathews junior school. Hail, Rain, Snow, Sun, We didn't have 'Mummy and Daddy' to take us to school in a car Our protection against the elements were a mac and a pair of wellies. Who remembers having chapped legs just above the wellie tops?? Do kids get chapped legs these days??

I remember chapped legs above wellies, they were treated with Fuller's Earth cream in a small round tin. The smarting for a few minutes was awful , but then afterwards it was soooo sooothing! Every night before bed after playing out in the snow...

I do remember chapped legs Ron and the Vaseline to rub in which usually sorted it. They all now seem to wear long trousers to school and trackie bottoms when out playing, I haven't heard of chapped legs for years, had a look on the net and apparently it's now called chaffed legs or skin.

Yes Cyril, your right I have been to Alexandra Park, with my son and his tipper truck 50 years ago, when we lived in Ormskirk Rd. For 8 months.Its the old grey cells not working.You have a good memory Cyril.
