Hindley Cemetery
Dennis, what a coincidence, today my wife and me are driving over them there hills and will be calling at the cemetery to visit graves of her family. Thanks for the P a D Dennis the timings is spot on.
The Friends of Hindley Cemetery have recently managed to re-open the cemetery chapel. They have posted photos on facebook and it looks lovely. Well done to them all. Have an enjoyable visit to Hindley, Walter.
Walt, you do well to take the car. I walked it up Castle Hill and about half way up I was overtaken by a woman pushing one of them double header prams
with two kids in! She was red faced and blowing hard but she still had the edge on my tired old pins.
I felt like asking her to come back for me after she got the kids to the top!
It’s no fun gerrin’ owd!!
I used to cycle to Wigan once a week years ago. I can remember the first time I cycled up the hill without getting off the bike.I love that stretch of the road up to Westhoughton. Rarely go that way these days,
unless counting the Lockdown a few times and walked.
Does the gatehouse still belong to the council or did it get sold as did the one at Ince cemetery. The one at Ince comes up for sale every so often so the buyers mustn't like living there.
Though I remember going to the one at Ince about something in the 1980s when the cemetery custodian still lived there, and recall thinking at the time that there wasn't much room inside at all, though this one at Hindley looks to be a lot larger and is also a very attractive building too.
Cyril, sometime ago I read a notice posted on the door of the gatehouse. The wording asked visitors not to call at the lodge seeking information as the residents had no link to the cemetery and could not offer advice.
Thanks Wigginlad. Before they buy these gatehouses then surely they must be aware that they shall have folks knocking and asking for information about graves etc., it's like those who buy houses next door to convenience shops then complain about motorists parking along their front to use the shop.
