Summer in Wigan
Thats a lovely pic Mick, brings back memories of ice creams, sunny days & Easter egg rolling on the slopes.
Mesnes Park was funded by well meaning locals with the residents in their minds, could you imagine what the current council would had done with this land?
Away from ' the madding crowd' but alas there's no crowds left in Wigan! Popular scene anyway.
Lovely photo, Mick. Our much-loved park. Timeless.
Good picture Mick
mum used to take me walks in the park a lovely place good photo mick
To the right just after the fountain - why is a horse taking a dog for a walk?
Do the parks still grow their own bedding and garden plants somewhere as they once did at the nursery and garden centre at Ashfield Park Drive Standish, or buy them in from a retailer?
I see what you mean Cyril...
Cyril.... they no longer have nurseries at Ashfield, there used to be some in the park itself, further on than the bowling greens and tennis courts but i think they've gone as well.
I know they got shut down Roy, the garden centre they had at Trencherfield Mill and the depots and compounds around the borough the parks had were also closed, they seemed to have had a massive witch hunt after Gil Swift retired, and not for the best either. They must buy the plants in from a company and I'd imagine that the grass and hedge cutting etc. will be tendered out to contractors too, as that's only done every now and again.
