Market Place
If you look at Market Place 1958 you will see the Market Place that we all still love and remember.
Not many people about! I must admit I came to Wigan last Saturday afternoon late on surprisingly there was more folk sat outside the cafes and pubs, not actually shopping. Must have been because of the sunshine.
I can't help thinking back to the Wigan of my youth when Market Place would have been heaving with people. Now it reminds me of a song from that time: "Everyone's gone to the moon".
Mabe this was taken early evening, was it Dennis, as there are no folk about? I have not seen it so empty, only when the shops have closed.Good photo though.
One or two phone zombies knocking about .
Good composition Dennis, good clear photos.
Wigan used to have so much to offer and We still go once a week but it is becoming lifeless, hope things will get better but it seems along climb back to its former glory.
It seems to be the same in most towns. What irritates me is when stores are relocated to these retail parks. I went up to Middlebrook the other day and was looking for the Next store. It has relocated further away from the main stores as if added on at the end with Home Bargains. It took me a good 20 minutes to get to it. Stores are closed down in towns to reopen in the 'wilds ' and further on to walk!!!***Not everybody has a car - even though there's plenty room for cars. I have ordered clothes online and 9 times out of 10 I end up taking them back...! So much time wasted.
I pride myself that I can honestly say I've never been to the Trafford Centre, Liverpool One or Cheshire Oaks.
Bruce, the Trafford Centre is worth a visit just to experience the building itself. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but it certainly leaves an impression.
Edna Wigan is empty no matter which day or time of day you go. A sad sign of the times and it is part of the reason the Galleries is being pulled down and being revamped partly with housing. Over the years we have seen C&A BHS Marks&Spencers Debenhams Morrisons even KFC close and leave a big hole in the shopping experience.Out of town retail parks with FREE parking also killing off the town centres
