Scholes
Photo: Dennis Seddon (Sony DSC-WX500)
I remember when those lights were controlled by traffic driving over rubber strips accross the road. Kids could do it too.
The flats on the left are what can be seen on Mick's flying pheasant photo. In the 'old' photo Amy Lane is on the left near the old building, you can just see the old wall down by the side. The old railway bridge is still there after Scholes bridge. Just a 'bit further' on and to the left on the bend you would come to Harrogate St / Shelmerdine St.
Sad to say though the 'old' photo was the beginning of the end of the Scholes I knew. Just look at the size of those trees now - I remember them being planted. What a novelty that was - trees in Scholes! Thank you for the photos Dennis.
Interesting comparison, Dennis.
Good 'un.
A rare time newer looks better than older.
Good photo Dennis, the trees have made a big difference. I also remember them being planted Veronica.Seems a lifetime ago.
Oh I can just hear the Warrington girl pipers band coming up the road
This brings back memories of walking up there from Warrington Lane to get to work at the Hospital before I learned to drive...and of course it will bring back memories for Veronica.
Thank you Dennis.
Good photo Dennis, yes I know what you mean about the trees Veronica and Edna, they are lovely, you can hardly believe how it used to look.
I remember cycling down Scholes as I worked at the in Worsley Mesnes powder works. Then cycling home to the top of Scholes daily. Couldnt do that now though. Loved sarsaparilla from the shop out of view on the left hand side.

Thank you Dennis.
If it wasn't for the trees it would look completely soulless.
Trees replaced shops and homes.
I wish someone could tell me why comments double up like mine.
I much prefer the inset photo than the today photo.
More character back then.
Gary, old Scholes was full of character, It seems to be soulless now.
Pauline, we too would be cock-a-hoop jumping on the rubber strips at traffic lights and watching them change, not at those particular lights though. We also rang the service bell at a petrol garage by jumping on those rubber leads that cars went over, we then then ran off before anyone came out, well you had to find your own amusement. And Colin Crompton though it was only folks at Morecambe who was thrilled at watching traffic lights change. https://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/2277753.can-they-restore-former-glories/
