What number bus is this ?

Comment by: Derek Platt on 22nd June 2021 at 05:41

Great photo again Dennis. Now is this looking towards Wallgate, if so what was the pub that used to be on the right hand corner.

Favvers a junkies den. Nobody bothers what happens on King St these days, what happens on King St stays on King St.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 22nd June 2021 at 08:27

Was it the Minorca, Derek? Now the Berkeley.

Looks like another one of Len's next to the Clarence .
They can stick their brutalist art . Topdeckism rules !
(I see Liverpool may lose its World heritage status because of new buildings).

Hi Derek, Was the Minorca-still there now "Barclays"

This is the revival of the Court Theatre. Let’s hope it gives a much needed boost to the regeneration of King Street.

This was once a nice St,I used to walk this St twice a day taking and bringing my little one to and from School years ago,Tesco's where I used to shop sold everything,Kinleys, a gents outfitters that sold classy goods, solicitors etc, look at it now, hubby and myself had been to the history shop and walked up here..what a mess, vomit and urine, needles etc,it smelled awful,I never wanted to go there again,it's just a crying shame,a disgraceful part of Wigan.
Thank you Dennis.

I like this idea of ‘Topdeckism’. Can we expect to see our Veronica setting up her easel on the front seat of a number seven bus in the near future? Perhaps the powers that be could organise a Artist’s Special Tour around the district, only those of an artistic bent allowed on board.

Don’t thank me Maureen, I’m not responsible for the urine and the vomit, much less the needles. (Only joking).

Oh Dennis,it did sound wrong didn't it lol..I'm thanking you for all the trouble that you go to for showing different parts of Wigan for which we all appreciate.

Dtease , I only paint 'lovely' scenes. I am a 'Romantic' at heart.... well that wuz wot a lecturer told me once...No idea what he meant at the time.... but I do now - King St is depressing enough, I try to avoid it best way I can coming to Wigan. There's only one 'topdecker' artist in photography and that's our Dennis.

Comment by: Maureen on 22nd June 2021 at 11:40

Veronica,I've often wondered why some people paint 'black' scenes,it must be their state of mind..as you know mines mainly portraits..animals.. and sea scenes,I honestly think it's the state of a persons mind that they put down on board / canvas..that's how they see the world unfortunately.

Comment by: Veronica on 22nd June 2021 at 13:21

I know what you mean Maureen. I think they are looking for a dramatic picture. You do need some dark to make the 'lights' sing, but I err on caution.

Remember that restaurant off Warrington Road, Marus Bridge / Winstanley area? Wigan Council made such a fuss about them painting their gable wall orange. "It gives Wigan a bad image to people heading towards town from the M6 junction", said a councillor.

I agree with Maureen, King St. Is a disgrace.I have not been down there since before first lockdown. We were always in the Court Cinema, and County, when we were courting. We saw Bridge over the River Quye six times too young to go in pubs at 17.

Woe, woe woe, haven't we nuff ont plate,
Wigan now looks depressing, lifeless to deflate,
There's nothing here to lift us,
No sense of going on,
just drifting to the next day,
like the one that just has gone.
Back then you felt a purpose,
a feeling you were alive,
your pockets didn't rattle much,
for pennies was need to strive.
But this is just so soulless ,
just a drift not digging deep,
a new found shell with nothing in,
in a town that's now in sleep..
