Arley Mill (Logwood)

Arley Mill (Logwood)
Arley Mill (Logwood) by the River Douglas near Arley Hall (Wigan Golf Club). It's thought to have been used to grind down logwood and fustic to extract black and yellow dyes for the clothing industry.

Dying was a big thing around this area, this is why the bleach works factory was built nearby.
If I was a Standish councilor I would get the grinding stones removed and make a feature out of them in the Standish village centre.

Good photo Mick, good point too

Dyeing even affected the River Douglas and turned the Yellow Brook yellow!
There's a very important difference between dying and dyeing Mick.

Comment by: DTease on 29th April 2021 at 09:19

Dying as always been a big thing Mick.

What a good idea Mick to make a feature out of the grinding stones in the Standish Village centre and I am sure the residents of Standish would be pleased too. Good photo David.

Yes, I agree with Mick. I like the idea of a village commemorating something of its manufacturing history. There will come a time when there is no-one left who remembers The Bleachworks and the surrounding industries.

Comment by: Kim on 29th April 2021 at 12:56

They could then match the traffic through 'the village' as it comes to a grinding halt.

It would be nice to see them on the library lawn with a little plaque detailing their history . The only problem is their accessibility . It would need either a helicopter or a team of Ancient Britons from Stonehenge to get them out the wood .

Mick, now the tea leaf's know about the millstones they may get to them before the Standish City Councillors could blink an eye, never mind them thinking of a feature.

Anyhow if a feature was to be made from them then it should stand in the centre of Worthington Village, though the Villages of Haigh or even Blackrod could rightfully have claim to them with Arley Hall being in both Haigh and Blackrod according to their postal address, Arley Hall, Arley Ln, Haigh, Blackrod, Wigan WN1 2UH.

It would be easy to get them out, just drag them up to the golf course with a tractor, then a trailer to Standish, if they are left in the woods it wont be long until they have been grown over.
Ive just done a survey of Standish and I would put one near to the Boars head, one at the bottom of Rectory lane , one on Almond brook road and one down near the chisnal hall pit entrance.
Visitors to Standish would see them from which ever road they were approaching Standish from.
Once that was sorted I would dig up the old cross base outside of the bungalow on Standish wood lane, and put it on a new foundation, because its sunk so much there is only about 3 inch showing.

Standish 'city councillors'????,

Comment by: Roy on 29th April 2021 at 17:26

Chisnall pit entrance is in Coppull Mick, definately not there,
Karen, with the amount of traffic passing through Standish it could be mistaken for a city
.

Standish City Councillors is wry humour at the ever increasing size of Standish which now seems to have almost as many houses as there are in Salford, with yet even more planned to be built, so it makes one wonder when will they be renaming the church of St Wilfred as a Cathedral and extending the campus at Standish High to accommodate a University?

Oh yes, and if they can find any space left they can build a City Hall.

Comment by: Basil Brush on 29th April 2021 at 19:49

leave them were they are or the ten bob millionaires of the village will want them for there gardens. better still break em up so no one will get them.

Comment by: James Hanson on 29th April 2021 at 21:35

Leave the stones to whoever owns them. They aren't yours!

Comment by: John on 29th April 2021 at 23:07

In any case, the Standish boundary on that side is the river Douglas, so these stones are in Haigh parish.

Comment by: John on 29th April 2021 at 23:22

Sorry, should have said "so aren't these stones in Haigh parish?"

Comment by: James Hanson on 29th April 2021 at 23:44

Something tells me they're in Blackrod.

Comment by: Karen on 30th April 2021 at 08:10

You are absolutely right Roy,but still they insist on referring to it as 'a village' ! You couldn't make it up !

Comment by: Veronica on 30th April 2021 at 08:33

It would be a desecration to move them after all this time. Clean them up and attach a plaque - sadly not everything from the past can be saved.

Comment by: John D on 30th April 2021 at 08:49

These stones are not in Haigh, Standish, or Worthington. They are over the Wigan Borough boundary and are in Blackrod which is in Bolton Borough. The fact that Arley Hall and the golf club have a Wigan postcode is irrelevant. Postcodes don't necessarily follow local authority boundaries, eg St Helens has a WA (Warrington) postcode.

If interested in home dyeing you can buy the natural plant and tree powders to dye cloth, wool and even hair.

basil, what's with the fixation with 10 bob millionaires ?

Comment by: Julie on 1st May 2021 at 17:41

It's not Basil's fixation,it's a fact.

Far too much anti Standish rancour going on here . Some people clearly have a huge chip on their shoulder .
