Great picture Dave, Mother Nature taking it's course I so wished it could of been a nasty pigeon, I love all garden birds, sadly we don't see them to often in urban areas as people seem to have a love for cats.

Nature's hitman, silent one,
weapon chosen, talon gun,
Laser vision, bullet speed,
target locked on,
Menu feed..

They will be very hungry at this time of the year

One of these landed on my back fence, here in the NE last month. Blackbirds, sparrows starlings and gulls made quick exits - it had a "just popped into Sainsbury's" look.
Flew off and within a minute, back like a rocket, to take a sparrow.
Good photo, Dave.
Nature, eh?

Beautiful capture and a beautiful bird. Nature seems cruel at times but it's survival for the sparrow hawk.

Years ago a Sparrow hawk killed itself by crashing through the glass in my neighbour's greenhouse . It was in pursuit of a Blackbird that had hopped inside to avail itself of the worms in his plant boxes . A case of 'Those that live by the sword ...' , I think .
A good photo .

Dave, really good photo ! just yesterday I saw the same scene in my garden here in Yorkshire I wish that I could have got the same photo that you have. Well Done !

I can't bring myself to say "lunch", and never will . Good photo though.

No other bird would dare to approach... the look in the Sparrow Hawk's eye says it all. The little sparrow must be his favourite morsel... poor little thing. They're not safe from cats and not safe from the bigger birds.

Poet one came crashing down in my neighbours garden and got tangled up in the netting that was covering his veg, lucky I saw it happen and I jumped the fence and I carefully untangled it and let it fly off again.

The Mafiosa of the Bird World.. next time I see one I'll be chasing it off... sweeping brush in hand!

No doubt about it... it is a "dog eat dog" kind of life on planet Earth. I wonder if it's any different on other worlds?

Dave, the birds in my garden have no peace for the cats, so I'll be chasing them with a sweeping brush.

Comment by: Bruce Almighty on 11th February 2021 at 18:00

Janet, the bird in the photo is a sparrowhawk.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 11th February 2021 at 18:07

Maureen, that's happened to me a couple of times recently! xx

Comment by: Mal on 11th February 2021 at 18:38

Janet, the 'windhover' is another name for the kestrel, not the sparrowhawk.

Comment by: Maureen on 11th February 2021 at 19:24

It must be a throwback to the days when you had to keep telling the kids over and over again Maureen. " I'll not tell you two again" !
