That's a great moody photo, could well be a still for the episode of Foyle's War - Elise.

Remember going on a background tour of the hall in the 1990s and the state of those top floor rooms was jaw dropping - the amount of piles of rubbish dumped up there and ceiling and wall plaster damage from the areas of the leaky roof, hopefully Contessa Hotels sorted all that.

With the Haigh Hall servants quarters being upstairs they would have had the best views of Wigan from there windows
I managed to talk my way up on to the roof of Haigh Hall a couple of years ago.

That is a fantastic photograph, Dave. I'm getting a Bram Stoker feeling looking at it. 'Loneliness will sit over our roofs with brooding wings'.

A brooding sky & hall, reminds me of the house in Jane Eyre.

Touched up or not it is a excellent winter subject, so different from all the sunny day pics we see of Haigh.

Absolutely superb photo Dave, could have been taken in the 1960s. We've been treated to some great photos this new year, thanks.

One of the best photos I've seen of Haigh Hall. It was always Summer when I went as a child, through the Plantations on the tractor, and it somehow, as with Southport, was something I never envisaged in Winter.

One of the most photographed places on P a D and this without doubt the best taken of the Hall, it's got that warm feeling even on a cold Winters day.
You are the best Dave, thanks.

Wigan's crown jewel looking majestic but forlorn. ( Have the 'intruders' been chased away?)

Comment by: Alan on 8th January 2021 at 09:30

We are so thankful and proud to view these fantastic set of photos from different parts of Wigan.
You are the best Dave and hope they inspire other people to snap around Wigan on photo a day in the future.

Can someone tell me, (in very simple terms!) how to transfer a photo like this as a screensaver on my laptop please, if it is possible for that to be done? I am useless with technology! I can just about manage to save a picture to my files but have no idea where to go from there!

A remarkable picture in black and white, I think B/W goes well with Wintery scenes. The Angles of taking photos is as important as the quality. Very impressive shot.

Irene, save photo to your pictures file, on you PC go to Settings - then Personalisation - then Background - then Choose Picture - then Browse - then choose and right click on the particular picture you want as your screen background, then you can choose how you want it displayed on your screen such as Fit, Stretch, Centre etc., I just leave them as Fit and they then fill the entire screen.

Very good photo Dave.Even if the sky looks angry!!! Irene I'm just like you with technology. I have seen something I would've loved to photograph for PAD. But don't have a clue how to upload it!!

Comment by: Rev David Long on 8th January 2021 at 16:18

Edna - I don't know why it's not shown on the feature, but you don't upload pics to P-a-D, you send them in an email to Brian: brian@wiganworld.co.uk

When I saw it I immediately thought of Sherlock Holmes film, The Hound of the Baskervilles. Brilliant photo!

Thank you for the information, Rev David. I didn't know that's what happened.
