I was wondering when a snowy scene was going to turn up and I would get my wish. That's a good one Dennis and I think there'll be more of the same, after last night's snowfall....(hopefully!). Reminds me of Winters of long ago when we didn't have Central Heating. Chapped knees, wet gloves, red noses and rosy cheeks and much more! We were a hardy lot as kids. Thank you..

A Winter Wonderland and a beautiful photo....thankyou Dennis.... on which to end the year. I love the mistiness in the trees and wish I was as confident walking on those icy roads as when I was a child. I cringe now when I think of the enormous slides we made. You fell and grazed your knees on the ice, you ran home yelling, your Mam said, "You're not dead", put a plaster on, gave you a jam butty and you got back on the slide....job done! Just another thought....when we used to go to the Saturday Morning Pictures, a film called "2021" would have sounded like Science Fiction, wouldn't it?! Happy New Year, Wigan Worlders, wherever you are. xxxxx

That’s a lovely photo Dennis, walked down New Road hundreds of times. I haven’t lived in Aspull for 52 years but my parents did, and I still think of it as home. We still go now to Haigh Churchyard. I agree with Julie, thanksDennis for the wonderful photos and the walk down Memory Lane this year. Or should we be thanking Mr Wilkinson for introducing you to photography all those years ago. All the best.

And 'worr about th'owd Wimmin' who put cinders on the slides and spoilt our fun Irene. We went further down the cobbles in Belvoir St and just made another- shouting 'mucky daddies' as we slid along! We made death traps really for the old ' uns.

Lovely wintery scene Dennis, thank you.

Wishing all PAD folk & those who work behind the scenes, a better 2021.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 31st December 2020 at 13:56

So true, Veronica.....and now WE'RE the old 'uns! I remember "mucky daddy" and when we slid along the slide crouched down, with our bottoms almost touching the ice, we called it doing "the little woman". DO have a Happy New Year, Dolly Dear! xx

Comment by: Kath H on 31st December 2020 at 14:14

Irene you have taken me back. I was a real Tomboy and I used to do the mucky daddy, forgotten about that saying. I don’t know how you remember them all. Best wishes

Hi Julie. Yes I did go to Aspull Secondary Modern. I was there the first day it opened, went into the second year from St John the Baptist New Springs. I used to live in St David’s Crescent. When were you at here. Kath x

Thankyou to all the photo contributors to P.A.D. It keeps an old expat in touch with his roots.
Making slides and rolling big snowballs to make barricades was a winter passtime when I was just a sprite.
Tough kids then in the 50’s, never gave the cold a single thought, loved snow and still do, I live in a winter wonderland across the pond but times have changed, still love snow, now watching it fall through a window in a warm home.
Glad to see the end of 2020 and hope 2021 brings a far better year.
All the best to WiganWorlders in all parts of the world and especially in my much loved town of Wigan.

Such a beautiful photograph Dennis. We haven't had any snow here in Pembrokeshire as yet, so I'll enjoy the beauty of Haigh clad in her winter coat.
Best wishes to you all and best of all - iechyd da in 2021! x

Good PIC Dennis and good memories from Irene about doing the "daddy" on the slides, I had completely forgotten about it. The things we learned back in the 50s were nearly always from the older lads.
Happy new year to you all.

Comment by: Pw on 31st December 2020 at 16:08

We used to call it the little daddy and I remember old biddies putting cinders on our slides out of spite, and there were quite a few of them.
