Old Seats
I remember those seats very well in the Scholes Pictures House. They were known as the 'best plush seats' at
the back, which cost 2s/6d ! Looking at them now , they were so bulky and made a clunking sound when you stood up!
As kids at the Saturday Matinee we would sit on the wooden ones at the front, looking upwards at the screen with an aching neck.
One of the joys of childhood!
Where is this please? It looks like a carpet shop with the samples on the stand. xx
Its the old Carlton cinema in Pemberton, its a carpet shop now, but they have put the three remaining seats on display and plan to show old films of Wigan, while customers look through the carpet swatches
Here is a video to accompany the PAD The Carlton
It looks like what was the Carlton Cinema on Ormskirk Rood, near to
the end of Tunstall Lane, which has been a carpet shop for a long time.
Lovely memories Veronica, I can remember all that you have said in your comments.Scholes pictures was great, and right on our doorstep.x
We still have some seats from Central Park,Wigan Rugby ground. When it closed,we qued for over an hour with our youngest son for them.Wonder how many more people still have them.
Thanks Mick and Ray. I live in Abram so not familiar with Pemberton. I DID visit that cinema once to see Beauty and the Beast with my daughter Ashley....she was only a young girl and is now 39 so obviously things have changed in Pemberton since then! At least the building is still in use and has some mementos of its former days. xx
Edna. We still have two seats from Central Park. We had season tickets, so managed to get the seats we sat in for many years.
Wonderful to stir the memory bank! We lived on Spring Bank near the library. and mum & dad very occasionally got the opportunity to get to the pictures. Dad would wear his slippers as the Carlton was only a walk away. I was 13yo and, with my two younger brothers, would have to look after our 3yo twin sisters while they were away. I have lived in Adelaide, Oz for the past 50yrs and photos like this stir the rusty old brain to bring back happy memories. Sad about the Latics though.
