Shevington in Bloom
A nicely composed picture, Mick. I recognized the scene immediately even though it is probably 50 years since I was last there. The buildings don't seem to have changed at all.
Thank you for the memory.
Alan
Nice pic Mick, so where's your house on this one.
Wigan Council have many railing flower beds, they have some lovely ones round leigh area. Ashton another. In fact, the every where. Nice one Wigan Council. Westhoughton area too.
I like the flowers that are placed in villages now, in tubs and on fences. They really brighten places up.
Is this the 'posh' Shevington I have heard so much about? It's not much different to where I live.... I love the Begonias, very cheerful.
Green for Go, Mick - this is top notch. And there's always room for a 'down the middle' yellow.
Nothing has changed there, it could be a 1960s scene.
I much prefer Appley bridge than shevington, the people are nice too. The flowers try and brighten the place up don't they.
Lovely flowers shame about the area, old fashioned as though time as stood still. I suppose the plants try and brighten the place up. Yes Westhoughton lovely place.
Very nice photo and all that Mick, but the council put them in some very dangerous places for seeing the traffic when crossing busy roads.
One example Scot Lane Aspull ,they have them on the crossing, you cant see the traffic coming from left and right ,just because its a red light doesn't mean their going to stop.
As has already been said, nothing much has changed over many years, the odd house converted into a shop and businesses changing to takeaways and hairdressers. Very colourful photo Mick
Well done Mick nice to see Shevy in bloom.
Local shops as well, hope they're all doing well. How many takeaways have you got?
The flowers on the right seem to be suffering from brewers droop!
Excellent shot Mick , well taken.
I have fond memories of Shevvy
Good to see it looking so good.
Thank you for posting .
That's very colourful Mick. Glad to read that Bewley's are still to carry on with a new generation taking the reins. Those small independent hardware shops that was on any High Street are greatly missed, now when you need half dozen or so of screws or nails you end up having to buy packs of fifty or more from superstores.
Mick, I don't know much about Shevington but I like the photo you have captured the scene very well. The pub Mick, is it still open ?, so many have gone to the wall now.
That's because it's not posh Veronica ! Even if some on here like to think it is.Westhoughton much nicer and has a lovely variety of shops on Market Street .
Like a lot of places it's getting built up and we are losing the lovely fields. One thing they don't demolish property around here at the drop of a hat. There's some very historic buildings over 200 yrs old! If they were in Wigan they would have gone with the wind Julie.
I know Veronica, there's lots of history in Westhoughton and like you say lots of buildings would have been demolished if they had been in Wigan.I know we are losing lots of fields everywhere.
Agreed Veronica lovely place Westhoughton, Market st Wetherspoons great. Natwest bank closed not long ago, sadly. Historic buildings yes, great photos from times gone by in Wetherspoons.
Trouble is with Westhoughton is, its stuck in between the busy A6 and the A58 and you get the bitter winds coming of Winter Hill and blowing up Market street.
Shevy luckily is on B roads and we have loads of green spaces, including the Rec, Memorial park, New sports field and community allotments in Vicarage lane
Sorry for the late reply Ive been to Blackpool having my head blown off
Market St in Westhoughton years ago was second only to old Scholes. Shops for everything you could possibly want and a good Market. Not nearly as good since the Supermarkets arrived, individuality has gone by the board nowadays, like many places.
Well Mick you will just have to mind you don't get blown of yer bike then.. anyway we are a hardy lot in Howfen. ;o))
