White-tailed bumble bee
Terrific shot, technically they shouldn't be able to fly, fortunately no one has told them. Beautiful creatures and they do so much good work in the garden
Lovely photo. xx
I wish they'd mow my grass.
ee by gum {Oy} you must have a very good close camera
Bruce - Bees don't mow grass. :)
Cyril - I have - I've taught it everything it knows :)
Ee-by-gum that's what micro lenses do.
These white tailed bumble bees are the ones on our lavender, they out number any other species of bee this summer.
Alan - this was taken using a regular 35mm lens. I don't have a macro/micro lens for this camera.
Helen - I've noticed a lot of these about this year too. Our Lavender is still attracting mostly honey bees though.
Both Bumble and Honey bees are so essential for pollinating the flowers on our food plants and trees, and yet some folks are so intent on destroying them, those neonicotinoid pesticides decimated their numbers and quite possibly made some species of bumbles become extinct, thankfully the use of this deadly substance has now been banned. You can help to feed the Bees by planting some bee friendly flowers (mixed seed packs are readily available) in your garden, and plants such as the Sea Holly as in the great photo.
My lavender bushes are full of these, but bees are all the same to me...
Spot on there with this photo.
A summer show without entreat
This August sunlit day
Of endless balm and tippled slakes
Come White-tail by the bays.
And now the jaw a silent purse,
Two glasses nice and slow,
For White-tail gives a whirling dance,
With Damsels by the row.
