Brilliant Dennis, great photo, an area I remember very well. As a young boy I delivered groceries for Billy Croston who had a small shop opposite the Moorgate Inn back in the1950s . All so different now as the insert shows.

Was the Moorgate Inn originally a Tollgate
Just past the Moorgate, up the hill, on the left, Doris Eckersley's fish & chip shop.
Popular in the 60s - when fish and chips was an inexpensive meal.
Mick, I don’t think it was ever a toll gate. I think the word “gate” is used as it’s old meaning of “road”. “Moorgate” meaning “ The road across the moor”.
Gary, I was born next door to the chippie in 1947.
Spent many happy hours in here before going to The Pink Elephant

Upholland, they say is nice , but I haven’t had a look.
Worsley Hall or Worsley Mesnes , Standish , Scholes or Shevvy , Appley Bridge and Abbey Lakes ,
Haven’t been to any .
