Market Place
Pie Gardens. What a soulless and wasted space in the town centre, when you think of the vibrance there in the past.Well done to the planning department.
It's so empty it reminds of Sunday's long ago before shopping was allowed...
What a lot of money just to re-arrange the layout....
No litter though. Wonder if that bin is full.
Helen, I'm sure you can place this spot, but if not, you are standing where the old underground toilets used to be, looking across to what used to be Broadmead's, (the fancy-turreted stone-coloured building). Library Street lies between that and the red-bricked turreted building, and Wallgate goes off the picture to the right. Broadmead's is now The Moon Under Water which is a Wetherspoon's pub. I like to think of you looking at these photos with us all and remembering.
Jack if you and your mates went to Wigan town centre more often it would still be a vibrant place
To be fair, it does look like it had been raining. Bet the 'Moon' was pulling them in
Mick. I go into Wigan frequently.I like to soak up the atmosphere of the Galleries, market hall and outdoor market.
Irene, that was the place! Having a pee and watching the people walk by overhead lol.
Not been into the town centre for three years this coming March. Won't pay the parking fees, anyhow have no need to, can get everything I need elsewhere.
When Summer comes there'll be a few people sat about, I'd like to know where the pigeons have gone - looks like they have deserted as well....
Bring back old Wigan.
Irene, I would not have had a clue where this was, thanks for explaining so well, I know exactly where it is now. I used to wait for a Corporation bus by the underground toilets to take me to my Grannys up near The Cherry Gdns.
I wouldnt think it would be the best place to sit come rain or shine !
Ugly Wigan, not a patch on what it used to be.. 50s,60s,and 70s were the absolute best in every way.. Thank Heaven I have my lovely memories..
Where the Moon under Water is, is where I used to get the bus to Ashton.. Running like mad from the Ritz to get the last bus, missed it a few times and got into big trouble when I got home..hahahahaha
Looks fine to me. A good meeting place (when the sun shines!)
