Signs
Photo: Tom Sutch (Fuji Finepix F810)
Remember as a child having a Coronation Scot jig saw puzzle almost as that picture shows. Also Coronation Scot music is now racing through my mind. Tom, "Thanks for the memories"
I like the Mallard Engine picture but where is the swan?
Beautiful traditional pub sign. What a wonderful occupation a pub sign painter was. I wanted to be one but alas the craft died out.
On t'other side Irene, it's a two sided sign.
Irene.... sorry to say, there are swans but no mallards.
Your right Tom, the blue engine was a streamlined Coronation Class of the LMS region.
The green engine looks a Southern region one and never went through Wigan.
The more appropriate sign is the middle one, but not a Southern Region locomotive a more fitting engine would have been a LMS Stanier Black Five that would have thundered over the bridge at the side of the pub every day in the BR steam days.
As always Tom a great photo.
It is a few years since I was in this pub, used to enjoy looking at the photos etc and the atmosphere.I agree with you Colin about the choice of engine but still a very nice sign.
The engine on the middle sign looks like a Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class.
Interesting stuff!
My choice for the sign would be a Black 5 :)
The centre sign loco is commonly nicknamed a spam can
Britboy, spam cam or no, I always thought this example of pre - nationalisation railway streamlining was the most attractive of the three - more pleasing than the LNER A4 and LMS Coronation Scot- the Great Western didn't go in for streamlining!
