Traffic lights, street lights, road signs, yellow lines, doesn’t it all look such a mess!
When I was a kid, where the shops are now was all pit waste down to Stanley Road and from there up the hill was cobble stones. Call me old fashioned but I would rather have it like that than the way it is now.

Comment by: Ken R on 25th October 2019 at 01:57

Good photo Ron. If someone asks you to meet them at "The shops in Aspull" everyone knows were they are.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 25th October 2019 at 07:39

It is astounding the number of signs you can see everywhere, poles with signs mounted on pavements meant for pedestrians...signs for people, signs for road users...signs for this & signs for that. They drive me crazy !

Comment by: Veronica on 25th October 2019 at 08:02

I'm surprised there's no Aldi or Lidle been built - Aspull seems to have escaped from them. How have they managed that? Westhoughton has gone from 1 supermarket to 4 in the last few years!

Comment by: Mick on 25th October 2019 at 08:48

The clinic is the most important sign on this photo, not just because of the doctors but because they have toilets that you can use if you get caught short were theirs no bushes.

Comment by: Poet on 25th October 2019 at 09:01

I have to confess Veronica that I love Lidl. The only store where you can buy a trombone and a turnip on the same trip.

Comment by: DTease on 25th October 2019 at 09:20

Good grief Veronica! PLEASE don’t wish that on us.

Comment by: Alan on 25th October 2019 at 09:37

Co-op just left of the photo!!

Comment by: Veronica on 25th October 2019 at 10:50

Hahaha indeed Poet!
Dtease give it time....they probably think Aspull is still Sleepy Hollows! We In Howfen never thought to see the day - Aldi and Lidl together!
Having said that on the openings, all the town turned out. I don't know whether the novelty has worn off or not.. I don't really frequent the stores- only now and again.

Comment by: John D on 25th October 2019 at 11:22

And left of the Co-op is a Barnardo's charity shop.

Comment by: Alan on 25th October 2019 at 12:45

Never been in one yet. I only like quality supermarkets.

Comment by: PeterP on 25th October 2019 at 14:23

Helen of Troy sometimes there are not enough signs eg-which lane to be in white arrows on the road no good if there is a vehicle over them. Shevinton Clinic is tucked away behind a chemist and a school but no sign on the main road to show you where it is So sometimes signs are useful

Comment by: DerekB on 25th October 2019 at 16:23

Prefer to spend my money giving business to British owned supermarkets and the Co-op , even if they are a bit more expensive. Suspect the extra cost is offset by their food products at least being of better quality.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th October 2019 at 16:56

There's so many signs you can't read them all if you are driving! Eyes darting left, right and centre. You need eyes in the back of your head! Glad I don't drive anymore...

A bit of action here, Ron, while the gentle meander of the modest handrail leading upwards to the shopfronts appears in stark contrast to the downward surge of the, sometimes stressful, polished lovelies. Well Done!

Comment by: Janette on 25th October 2019 at 18:05

Seen a lot more signs around than is on this photo. There is a Co-op just out of sight and also a Spar.Don't think Aspull needs an Aldi or a Lidl.

Comment by: Alan on 25th October 2019 at 20:31

Fully agree with Janette.

Comment by: Axcroft on 25th October 2019 at 21:57

Love this photo.
Lidl and / or Aldi would benefit Aspull.
Co-op doesn't quite cut it for me, boring shop - worse than Spar.

Evening Prayer.

Tomorrow
In the sinking crimson sun
They'll snow upon the field .
Fifteen red and bloody roses fought!

Pray they will not yield
Under the brutal Black onslaught.

Is this what progress means?
We had in our Council estate the same, we had the Top shops like the above, and the Bottom shops. We still have the Bottom but the Top died? This was fifty years ago.
We are going backwards to the point of despair.. Well for me at least.
The Wealth have it , The Wealth have it UNLOCK!

Comment by: Veronica on 26th October 2019 at 08:54

Don't care for Spar or the Co-op, get rid of Spar far too expensive!! Better still go to Middlebrook and take your pick! Then again it's dodging traffic....keep Aspull free.

Comment by: Alan on 26th October 2019 at 11:11

Big quality supermarkets are cheaper that the convenient stores. never been in Aldi or Lidl they might be cheaper but i like quality brands.

Comment by: DTease on 26th October 2019 at 19:24

I don't know, I'm not sure, in fact I'm only guessing really but, I think Alan only goes for quality.

Comment by: Veronica on 26th October 2019 at 20:26

I'm sure he does Dtease he always mentions 'quality' should we buy him some Quality Street for Christmas - have a whip round....but don't go to Lidl or Aldi for 'um...How about Fortnum and Mason?

Comment by: DTease on 26th October 2019 at 21:20

Speaking of whips Veronica, do they still make Walnut Whips? I used to love those but I don't recall seeing any for sale recently.

Comment by: Alan on 26th October 2019 at 21:43

Sorry don't eat sweets, I have a great body and high quality fitness.

Comment by: Veronica on 26th October 2019 at 22:38

I've seen quality Walnut Whips in M&S own brand Dtease... I wonder if walnuts are getting scarce..I haven't seen any Nestle ones come to think...no use having a whip-round then...

Comment by: DTease on 26th October 2019 at 22:50

We all get the same quality medal when our time is up Alan.

Comment by: Alan on 27th October 2019 at 10:07

Yawn...it's got boring yet again.

Comment by: Veronica on 27th October 2019 at 11:44

Your comments are the most boring and worse, mean spirited. I suppose your idea would be that folk should comment in less than half a dozen words because you can't keep up. That won't happen I'm afraid.

Comment by: janet on 30th October 2019 at 10:26

would not like to live there
