Cross Base

Nice picture, Michael.
One of four stones on the route between Wigan and Chorley, and with two grooves (East and West.) on its top.
The steps with courtesy of what could be a neighbouring hazel tree - the numerous spear-like suckers pointing in that particular direction.

I wonder what happened to the cross and why it was dismantled -the base looks ancient.

MIck, what a coincidence, on my walk in June I came back this way from the mill dam area and took a photo from the same spot. Now I know what it is -Thanks.
I guess we, as a family in the 50's & 60's, on our Sunday walks must have passed it not knowing what it was.
According to a book on Standish I have this was an ancient route from Wigan through Standish.
