Wintry Winter Hill
A bit different now to when my son and his colleagues were working round the clock in blistering heat trying to put out fires.
It looks beautiful yet there's been quite a few aircraft disasters up there. I remember the one in 1958 flying from the IOM killing 37 people. Not forgetting the aircraft during the war, an American plane in 1942, and the crew of a Wellington Bomber in 1943 and others besides in the 50's and 60's.
The tallest mast, in the foreground, was erected in 1964/65 for the new BBC2 service.
The conical one, just off centre, was the original 1954 ITV mast.
Pigeon Tower at the edge of the central clump of trees.
A good photo, evoking many memories.
Always look on the bright side eh Veronica
If I had been a member of the IRA blowing up squad, I would have blown up the Winter Hill telly mast I think it would have upset a lot of people in Granada land when there screens went blankety blank.
Wouldn't have bothered me, no telly.
Cretinous programmes with seriously annoying presenters.
Bright for us Nick, but not for those who gave their lives for us during the war and far from home.
Mick... it WAS attacked, by the Welsh! Protesting over Welsh Language TV, or lack thereof. They tried to break in and disrupt transmission.
I didnt know that Caddy
A wonderful photo, I have never seen it looking like that before. Well done!
Pray , Wigan children , be not , be not me
