Makinson Arcade
Great photo of the arcade, at one time this place would be bustling with shoppers. Where have they gone?.
Christmas just gone, now Chinese New Year on its way (Tuesday 5 February)
Then it will be Easter.
I see my cousin. The person in the white jacket. Wonder what it is she bought in the red carrier bag?
Well Jane, that looks much better, nice & uncluttered.
I like this. I liked the umbrellas they had hanging up a while ago, too. Simple but effective.
Much older and nicer than the modern in my view. There seems to be more shops still open inside the arcade.
Is the other one, Little Arcade, (Market Arcade) also still in existence?
No, that went in 1971! The Royal Arcade, down near Mesnes Street, is still there.
I have so many memories of this Arcade being brought up so near to Wigan town centre...one that occurred when I was in my thirties,I was walking down the Arcade when in the distance I saw a woman who was my double..when she saw me she stared all the way up to the top of the said Arcade..if there are such things as Dopplegangers,I've certainly seen mine...poor devil.
On another note, didn't Marks and Spencer once run the shop on the left of this photo..the one right facing the shoe repairers.
I was right, it is my cousin she was with her two great grandsons. Her grand-daughter was somewhere behind.
Nice photo.
Mick must think Wiganers are thick.
That's amazing, Maureen, and almost as if it was meant for you both to be in the same place at the same time. Some friends of my Mam and Dad went to the Isle of Man many years ago and told us that the waitress in their guest-house was my double.....looks, mannerisms, everything. It's a strange world! xx
It does make you wonder doesn't it Irene.
