Station Market
This used to be a quality wine and spirits outlet.
It seems ironic to me that large stores are closing down and 'corner shops' are springing up as small markets - albeit some of these stores could be Polish for instance.
Will this be the future for Wigan I wonder.
Roy, still is judging by the advert on the window. Not having been over to Wigan for many a year is this Wigan North Western station I wonder !.
Addison wines on the front - Robinsons Saddlery down the side
Was this once a Saddlers shop? Or was that round the corner?
This used to be Addisons Wines and Spirits and my grandfather, Tom Wilson, was Manager of this shop from the early 1950's until he retired in 1968. Robinsons Saddlers was in alleyway right behind the shop.
JJP, not the same proprietors as before, it was a class shop, without the 'Bargain Booze' type adverts slapped all over the windows, they used to sell top class wines and spirits. I bet if you went in now and asked for a bottle of Courvoisier they wouldn't know what you were talking about.
Roy, I was in the 'offy' the other day and heard a young lad rebuke his mate who was examining a bottle of Courvoisier with the words, " l'm not drinking that cr*p", and then proceeded to buy a crate of WKD.
JJP, this is Wigan North Western station. The exterior and booking hall were rebuilt when the West Coast line was electrified in the early 70s, along with improvements to the platforms and access to them.
Poet, Pray tell, what is WKD, is it a drink for the masses?
Ken R Wkd is a vodka based drink sold has an alcopop
Ken R - suspect WKD might be good for petrol lawnmowers.
It's a great credit to you Ken that you aren't familiar with this concoction: long may it remain so.
Not sure if it's mainly for the masses , l would think toxicologists have the most interest in it.
Sadly, all that the younger generation want to do these days is blow their brains as quickly and cheaply as they can. Some of the stuff they are drinking is barely fit for human consumption.
Courvoisier, crap??? I despair at the Youth of today..
