Royal Arcade
Am I right in thinking the Royal Arcade was what I knew as the Little Arcade near BHS ? If it is, the shop on the left was called Bon Marche...not the Bon Marche of today.... I remember being bought my red leather tap shoes there, when I used to go to the Moss Dancing School, opposite the original bus station & along from Hope Congregational Church.
A few years I went with my friend to a nice café in The Royal Arcade that had pictures of Old Wigan around the walls. We always thought of the Royal Arcade as a bit "posh" when we were young.
Helen, you are on the right arcade...it WAS near BHS, and some people MAY have called it The Little Arcade, but it tended to be the arcade where Gorner's café was that was usually known as The Little Arcade, or The Old Arcade, (its proper name being The Market Arcade). BHS was the building to the extreme left of the photo showing the sign BIG SALE in its window; it is B&M Bargains now.
Thank you Irene....its good to see these photos even if it leaves you wondering where the heck was that photo taken !
Thanks to Mick too.
For me Irene, as you say, The Little Arcade was the one with Gorner's and Smiths in it.
How I loved that little arcade..it was quaint and full of character...hello Roy.
I remember the little 'exclusive' shop that sold posh hats and accessories. Many Wigan women went there for wedding finery years ago.
Hi Maureen, are you well ?
I'm fine thank you Roy, and hope you are too.
