It's marvellous how Nature reclaims what is hers -without any help from us. That's apart from old apple cores thrown from the windows of moving trains long ago!

This is now part of the national cyclepath,the Wigan part will join Haigh Hall to Pennington flash.

In the 50s and to 1960 this line saw Stanier and Fairbairn 2-6-4 tank engines on passenger work. Freight, lasting a bit longer, was largely in the hands of Crab 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 austerities.
I don't think the passenger service, Wigan NW to Blackburn, ever made money. The freight work did, for a time.

Gary, You are confusing two different lines. The photo shows the former Whelley line but your comments are about the former Red Rock line.
