shocking vandalism. It shows no respect for the town and its heritage

Comment by: Alan on 2nd September 2017 at 11:02

That was bound to happen sooner or later.

That's what I call a chap with no brains. Wigan Council stop wasting public money.

Comment by: David Hurst on 2nd September 2017 at 12:48

The "chap with no brains" is the one that did the damage.

David Hurst it may not be a chap..girls are as bad these days.

We need to rebuild civic pride in where we live. They've done well with this in many parts of the Netherlands. Here's an example: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.5095947,4.9767491,3a,75y,234.47h,93.76t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s5tX86lRpJ0oqXfL4-xQpJg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 Have a "ride" around via Google Street and it will show just what can be done to improve things.

What do these "PEOPLE" i.e. Scum, get out of destroying things? which other people enjoy? The problem is these days there are no police and there is No Deterrent When/if the perpetrators are caught, what do they get? A slap on the wrist.. They or their parents should be made to pay the restoration costs, not just for this but for any acts of vandalism. I for one, am for more CCTV cameras. Never mind all these Civil Liberty Brigade. If you aren't doing anything wrong what is the problem?

Comment by: Db on 2nd September 2017 at 20:17

Brick Maker, if you're all for more CCTV, or rather more surveillance, then you wouldn't mind your emails and internet browsing being snooped on and read by government agencies and other departments?. CCTV, in my view, is there to erode peoples privacy away not about deterring and stopping crime, and "terrorism" and all that nonsense. We're made to believe that we have a huge crime problem, which isn't true, and they condition us into thinking "something must be done about this", and then what you know, they roll out the CCTV cameras that they were wanting in the first place, because there's now the excuse to justify it. That's why these cameras are everywhere now, encroaching more and more into our lives in places you'd never imagine. CCTV doesn't stop vandalism or any other crime, the problems just go elsewhere, and no doubt the cameras just follow.

I agree wholeheartedly with BRICK MAKER. Well said.

I, and obviously many others am totally disgusted by this type of vandalism. It seems to happen everywhere, As an example, a riverfront park in the town where I lived until last summer was vandalised when several very impressive, although "fake" totem poles carved in the aboriginal manner, were destroyed by axe slashes and then set afire. At the time, nothing was done about it; the reason given was that "they" couldn't find the perpetrators. People who lived in the area said that there was not obviously much investigation, either by police or town officials.
..If people realise this, what is to stop further vandalism?
-Well that's my take on these situations, anyway. Not that my humble opinion matters in the grand scheme of things, but it helps me to be a little more "cool' about them!

I agree with Db. The same also applies to so-called "safety cameras" on the roads. Beware of these back-door" Big Brother schemes.
