Photo-a-Day (Sunday, 14th May, 2017)
Sir Francis Powell
One of the best known scenes in Wigan. Well done Mick.
Great shot,memories.
You are so right Alan. Brings back happy childhood memories for me seeing this.
He's still pondering after all these years and if that's the message you get then the sculptor did a brilliant job! No mistaking Wigan Park - its nice to be reminded now and again!
when I was in Wigan a couple of weeks ago I did notice that Powell's shoe wasn't as shiny as it used to be. Is the tradition dying out?
I love to see little children rubbing the shoe as I did so long ago, and I hope all their wishes come true.
Kath the statue as just bee refurbished because parts of it had holes in including the shiny bit of shoe.
You can see the holes on this video of it being gentle rub

I think I have said this before - but my mam always called him 'that man in't park wit stone belly'! What a description!!
Veronica, I've said this before too.....when it was really cold my Dad always said, "Owd Mon! Ah'm cowder than 'im in t'park"!
I miss all those funny expressions Irene - as soon as I saw the photo I thought of my mam...,!
