We are hoping to have a monument to our mining heritage in the centre of Wigan. If anyone would like to make a donation I will post the bank details later. The group behind the campaign believe that we ought to have a memorial not only to the miners who died in the industry but also for the countless thousands whos lives were blighted by lung deisease also to remember the women and children involved in the mines . I'm sure that the majority of Wigan people have some connection to miners and will feel that we should have a memorial .
The details for anyone wishing to support the monument are. Yorkshire Building Society,Market Place Wigan. Sort Code 60-92-04 Account Number 81327874.
Ref 8132787407.
See the pan on the right?, well I had one exactly like that one until I lent it to someone quite recently. I've never actually seen the thing since, up until now that is. Still, it's no great loss as I only used it to boil my socks and underpants in.....Oh bugger! I hope I haven't put anyone off their lobbies.
Forgot about it. I had forgot about it and where was it held . I will say this the nosh looks very good .
Great to see this but I didn't see it advertised, where was it and when. Also, can anyone give details of how to contact the fundraising organisation - have they got a Facebook page?
what monument?
What a shame some people hadn't heard about our great Launch. It was a fantastic night with some really good speakers. If anyone wants any more information please contact me on sheila.ramsdale@blueyonder.co.uk
Our group is called WHAMM. Thanks
Ozy, late local comic Harry pemberton one said ther was eight kids in his family, and the highlight of the week was lobby made in a large pan like the one in the photo left simmering over night ready for Saturday lunch, well one week his mother took in a stray cat that Friday night she forgot to put the lid on the pan, when we awoke Saturday morning the cat had pooed in the lobby ( we had to throw half of it away).
Well done to the people involved in the fundraising. I'm sure the people of Wigan who had miners and pit-brow lasses in their families will appreciate it. Many members of my family worked down the pits, including my dear Dad Bob who was down The Maypole Pit at twelve years old. On behalf of them all, Thankyou. x.
A very tasty photo well done John
Where ever there is worthy cause such as this one - you will always find the hardworking ladies who are usually the stalwarts of any organisation! Unsung and in the frontline! Well done!
Veronica, two male friends of mine are in this fund-raising group and are very hard-working indeed!
All I can say Irene is I hope they achieve what they have set out to do! I'm sure we will all be pleasantly surprised.
I hope so too, Veronica, and hope they get a lot of support. It would be wonderful to see a monument to the Miners. They are a part of our history and, in so many Wigan families, a part of our lives too.
Good idea, about time ,they have a really great sculpture on a traffic island in St Helens , I'm sure Wigan could do better!
The WHAMM Campaign is now talking to various sculptors Cliff, getting ideas and costings, but it doesn't come cheap. So come on Wiganers, help us make a lasting memorial to your ancestors a reality. You will see more about the Campaign in the months ahead.
