I've looked and looked again at this picture and can't for the life of me recall the gas station! Assuming that this is at the "Vicarage corner",the picture seems all wrong to me! ...how long has the garage been there? and are the houses to the left on College Road?...or am I just having a prolonged,or permanent "senior moment"???

Comment by: MikeW on 17th January 2017 at 06:23

Isn't this area known as Wide Cross?

Comment by: Mick on 17th January 2017 at 07:30

Mike W, I sent the photo in as Wide Cross Upholland but its name as been changed to Bend by the admin.
Helen Im coming down from hall green the road on the left goes to Roby Mill and Appley Bridge and the road on the right goes to Upholland

I am with you there Ellen, you & I have been away to long. When in the area a few years ago we went to look for my families house at Ormskirk Rd, Holland Moor...got totally lost !

Comment by: Anne on 17th January 2017 at 08:29

The garage is Wide Cross garage and has been there at least thirty years but the mini roundabout not so very long. Before the roundabout it was a simple wide sweep round the war memorial.

Ok, I am with you now Mick. Thanks.

Gas station? don't you mean petrol station?. Too many Americanised words these days; I hear the words guys a lot these days instead of men or blokes, and High School instead of Secondary School. Each to their own I suppose.

Isn't this near to where the car dealers is called Ron Hodgson?, where they sell really expensive cars, incl Ferraris?. Saw a Caterham there not too long ago for about 40 grand and an Escort RS Turbo for about 30 grand.

Ellen, Mike, the garage has been there many years, was once known as Ashton's Garage, sometime in the past Ashton's Cafe was on the site various shops and accommodation were there as well as the garage over the years. The old premises were demolished about 20 years ago and the present garage and shop were built. The area was once known as White Cross or Wide Cross Brow, also Vicarage Corner and more often nowadays as "The Monument" as the war memorial is just out of vision on the left of the photo.

I have to agree with Al on the use of Americanisms....drives me potty! But I like the photo. I don't know the area very well...we only went as far as The Owl pub, and that was 40 years ago! Looks a nice place.

Comment by: A.W. on 17th January 2017 at 12:28

Correction - The Monument is just out of sight on the right of the photo.

I'm not particularly fond of Americanisms creeping into the English language either, but I'm prepared to be lenient and make an exception for someone who has spent the last half century living in Canada.

When did Upholland become part of Wigan??

Comment by: britboy on 17th January 2017 at 18:11

Damn yankeeeeeeeeees

Comment by: Garry on 17th January 2017 at 18:18

The correct word is filling station.
Petrol stations was known years ago, but now many diesel vehicles about.

Comment by: Garry on 17th January 2017 at 18:25

Broady all the time, just round the corner where the cars are heading, it goes in to Lancashire.
If anyone isn't sure look which Council empties the refuse bins, that well tell you.

Comment by: broady on 17th January 2017 at 19:25

I always thought it was West Lancs. or something similar.

Comment by: Ellen on 17th January 2017 at 19:27

Thanks to everyone for putting me right!....and thanks to Ozy for making allowances!..I do try not to use Americanisms on Wiganworld, but this one just slipped out. I frequently have verbal (literally,I talk to my computer!) arguments about my spelling "in the English manner",and was the cause for some giggles when working as a nurse and used the English spelling as in words like Haemorrhage instead of losing the'a'. However,I persisted! All of that was simply an apology, not a defense -I will try to keep my North Americanisms at a minimum!

Down, Britboy, Down, lad...You live among 'em....

Good photo, Mick, with lots of interesting comments...

Comment by: Broady on 18th January 2017 at 09:04

Garry,
Everything I read points to West Lancs. so why the need to tell lies?? A tad childish.

Comment by: A.W. on 18th January 2017 at 09:22

Broady, UpHolland has always historically been associated with Wigan. West Lancashire and Wigan Area are all part of the county palatine of Lancashire.

Comment by: Ellen on 18th January 2017 at 17:58

For as long as I can remember, when asked where I was from, I would say Wigan, even though i grew up in Holland Moor...who ever heard of Holland Moor?

Comment by: Garry on 19th January 2017 at 09:14

Broady I don't tell lies, i'm trying to educate you that's all. The area in this photo is Wigan.

Comment by: A.W. on 19th January 2017 at 10:19

Ellen, I was at a crowded gathering in UpHolland about a year ago and there was a "celebrity" present who said "is UpHolland in Wigan or Skelmersdale". The unanimous shout of "Wigan!" was deafening! lol.

Comment by: Broady on 19th January 2017 at 13:35

I give in to all you learned scholars. Just find it funny there are no Councillors from Upholland on Wigan Council and no monies go to Wigan from Upholland. As for the Skelmersdale question that would be a foregone conclusion.

Comment by: Ellen on 19th January 2017 at 19:31

I like that one,A.W.! When I was a small child, my Father's family (he was from Skelmersdale) used to refer to us as foreigners from 'oer't brook', that being the Tawd! Needless to say, New Town aside,I think of myself as coming from Wigan, and despite Canadian citizenship, will always be an Uphollandite and a Wiganer!

Comment by: MalcyD on 22nd January 2017 at 12:20

Have a look here for a picture taken many years back when it was still a petrol station.
