The Way We Were
Wigan pier...it's gotta be
What an absolute waste of Wigans heritage !
I remember when this area was a thriving attraction,a pity to see it looking so desolute.
it is so sad to see this. My brother & I came here not long after it opened. it was such an experience to see how well it was presented. it was full as well. What has happened?
This is what happens when the dead hand of socialist bureaucracy has been stifling initiative for generations in places like Wigan.
Wigan Council should be ashamed of themselves for letting this happen. Also,I was walking through The Galleries the other day and heard an obviously not from Wigan couple commenting on the state of a town centre shopping centre.
No longer live in the area, but had visited the complex a few times when it (and the Opie collection) still up and running.
I did say at the time, that I thought it had become unsustainable, when it morphed from a general attraction, to a 'keeping kids amused' place.
Nowt against such, or any other facilities for kids, but noticed on last few visits that number of staff far exceeded the number of kids they were 'entertaining'! Maybe inevitable, so close to water, but along with the decreasing functionality in respect of the adult audience, it becomes a very expensive diversion for bored kids!
I did not expect it to last once it had become such.
If all you Wigan moaners would have used it more often the place would have still been open
A utter disgrace !
The most recent info for the area I can find is here (Feb/2016):
http://www.wishfm.net/news/local/council-bosses-positive-on-wigan-pier-quarter-regeneration-plans/
and something is happening at Today's Community Church:

which may or may not be part of the redevelopment plans for the area.
Wigan Council shit
How sad it is that this has been allowed to happen! I was never fortunate enough to have seen it in it's heyday, and now it has been relegated back to the music hall joke that was all I have personal memory of....However, I have Wiganworld to thank for the images I have seen.
Quite wrong of you Mick first i do not believe those you mentioned are all moaners! The plain fact is irrespective of how many people would have visited it the blame lies at the feet of the council, not the folk of Wigan dont forget also there is an estimated 400,000 of us here in the borough, have a nice day Mick.
I love you all , but , for heavens sake, for the kids sake, get into the modern world. Value the treasure you were taught, now move on.
Once was? So many people are sitting on their arses , Still, talking about chimneys, and the way it was. Wigan needs modern buildings for modern out looking kids , to take them forwards not backwards. Children are not interested in cotton mills, they,re interested in a world out there, not a sad picture of neglect like this.
modern buildings like the galleries ?been in once that was enough a world out there ?.the world today is not a world to look forward too,it is a world full of fear ,evil and god knows what. too much in this modern world thankyou ,to look forward to
