A nice photo, Mick, thanks.
It's the 6th Wigan Diggers' Festival on Sat 10th September, 11am-9.30pm, at Gerrard Winstanley Gardens, The Wiend. A free, fun packed, open air event commemorating Gerrard Winstanley & the 17th Century Diggers' Movement.
This year's Winstanley 'Spade' Award is being presented to film director and housing campaigner Ken Loach.

Diggers Festival Saturday 10th September
I didn't know much about Gerrard Winstanley till recently when I acquired a copy of a magazine called "History Today" May 1969 issue. There is a long article about him and the diggers.
one day I might discover this man is related to me . Wouldn't that be great?
Let us hope one day Wigan can boast a monument to its mining past and the loss of life it cost.
I dont think that the present council like being reminded of our mining history. There is nothing in the town to link to the mining generations, except for the winding pulley conveniently pushed round the corner of the College, which was originally named The Wigan and District Mining and Technical College
Also i wish to agree with Fred Foster about minus tributes to Wigan's past ,beside mining how about the cotton mill's also
Wigan Council?
