The expression...I can't see the wood for the trees ....is very apt here!

I've been waiting for this!

Always a lovely scenic route through Aspull and Haigh and onto Standish. Especially the twisting country lane where the road narrows near the bridge. The daffodils are a feast for the eyes after winter.

Are the daffodils only just coming out ? We now live in Somerset about 10 miles west of Bristol. I, not kidding when I say some daffodils around here were out around Xmas and many have been standing for 2-3 moths - many are still in full bloom
including some in our garden. Amazing how the climate varies even in such a small country as the UK

Just higher up, past Ratcliffe Rd. and near the lamppost is a stone by the road about 18 inches high with an oval plate on it. Anything known about it?Something to do with the old colliery railway?

Back when we were kids this little wood was always known by the name "Holly Nook" a path ran straight through it from Haigh Road to Scot Lane following the school boundary fence. Neil, I've not seen the sign you refer to but I have an old Aspull map that shows numerous mineral railway lines criss-crossing from one pit to another and then onto towards Wigan were they joined the mainline, I would think the sign relates to these.

Springtime is one of the things I most miss, since I left England. Those of you who remain, please spare a thought for an Ontarian who is currently watching snow flurries from my window!

Very apt quote from "A Winter's Tale" then Ellen if you are still waiting for Spring. Hope the Summer makes up for it. Or is it just Summer and Winter in Canada?

Vb; Here in Ontario we very definitely have four seasons. It's just that Spring takes its own sweet time coming! My favorite seasons are Spring and Fall. As I get older,I find the Summer too hot and humid!
