Photo: David Barker (Nikon D3000 18mm-55mm VR lens)
Impressive competition overdue for the Spar.
Barnardos tucked on to the Coop, they have done the same with the new Tesco metro at the top of Gidlow lane
David, great picture, I am a Aspull lad and as a 15year old back in 1962 I worked in the original Co-op store on Bolton Road, its good to know the Co-op is making a come back.
Walt I might have remembered you wheh I was a little girl I am know in my fiftys I used to live at 614 Bolton road facing the gerrard arms pub when the houses used to be there I used to come in with my mum frances bateman does can you remember and Austin I think his name was the post man do you also remember polly and fred who used to have the post office.
Hi Walt. I was an Aspull girl, and was also 15 in 1962 and went to Aspull Sec Modern. i was Kathleen Moore then. What is your surname and have two brothers Bernard and Derek who you might know. It was a Labour Club in my days.
Julie - Polly and Fred Cockram were at the post office. Polly was formerly Weaver and I think her parents had the post office before them. Fred drove a yellow and white Ford Consul.
Walt, I seem to recall a lad called Leonard Baron working at the Co op. It was known as Lower Gullet.
Hi Julie, Hi Kath, I worked at the upper branch near the finger post long ago demolished to make way for the school, but I did help out from time to time at the lower branch at the lower part of Bolton Road, I think its a little bungalow now. Kath, my surname is Southern, I also went to the Secondary school between 1959 and 1962 long time ago now. Do you remember there was a bridge right where the new Co-op is on Haigh Road, a railway line ran underneath the road on its way to the various pits in the Aspull area, I'll bet not many people will remember it.
Gary, I worked just odd times at the lower branch and you are right to call it Lower Gullet but --- I got myself a right 'telling off' for calling it this in front of a customer, she thought I was being very rude she didn't know that there was a Upper Gullet and a Lower Gullet and wouldn't listen to a 15 year old. Most of 1962-63 I was at the branch higher up Bolton Road.
Kath H, is your brother one of the " Three Aspull Lads" on the Album? The lad on the right was named Bernard moore.
Hi Dennis
Yes I have seen that photo of the three Aspull lads and it is my brother Bernard. Are you from Aspull and what is your surname.
You're right Walt I certainly don't remember a bridge there. I just remember the Labour Club.
I remember you Julie Bateman from Aspull secondary modern in the 70's
Kath H, yes I am from Aspull and I put the picture of Bernard on the Album. It is one of four or five that I took on the same day in 1961.
Kath, if you were 15 in 1962 then you, Walter and myself must have started at the School together when it opened.
According to my blue Report Book ( Which I still have ) the date of admission was 7 Jan 1960 and I was admission number 99.
Because I was already 12 yrs old I started out in form 2A. The science teacher, Mr Wilkinson, was the form teacher and apparently I was assigned to Lancaster House.
If I can find those other photos I will put them on the Album.
Thank you all, interesting comments,Hi Walter hope you and Joan are keeping well, never knew about the Co Op in Bolton Road bit before my time lol, surprising a photo of a new Co Op shop in Aspull ,can bring so many memories back .
well pepsi who are you what is your name then I might remember you its some time ago about 38 years ago now.
Dennis. We were in the same form 2a. Mr wilkinson was lovely, and our form room was the science lab.I still have my blue report book in the attic somewhere. I am still in touch with Kathleen Tait and Olive Brown. Our Bernard moved back to Haigh last year, so you may see him around. Would love to see your other photo's.
Walt, did you have a brother named Eric who lived in Blackrod? I was a good friend of his and went fishing with him regularly including Ireland and Holland. He died several years ago and I still miss him.
John, yes Eric was my elder brother passed away November 2003 and like you I still miss him very much also Ann and Ian... GOD Bless them all.
You're right Walt I certainly don't remember a bridge there. I just remember the Labour Club.
