Nice photo, looks smart, nice and clean.

Looks so much better with the corner opened up and that big old fashioned pit wheel moved out of the way.

A square box with square Windows and a fancy bit hanging of the roof, wow! I bet the Architect really had to concentrate to design that.

Mick I beg to differ, the wheel gave the place a bit of a reminder of our town history. put the wheel back I say.

Comment by: PeterP on 18th December 2015 at 13:51

Mick that old fashioned wheel/pulley is part of our heritage not like the nasty concrete building behind it

Comment by: Veronica on 18th December 2015 at 15:30

I wonder if the modern building will stand as long as the sturdy red brick building.....I think not.

Comment by: Mick on 18th December 2015 at 16:14

If they wanted to keep the old pit wheel they could make it into a place for chaining up the students bikes.

Comment by: Ken R on 18th December 2015 at 16:24

The pit "wheel" is a head pulley not a wheel. A big difference.

Well said Den, Alan, Peter and Veronica. And yesterday's image showed us the great old Gas Showrooms building with that monstrous carbuncle added to the end of it. Isn't modern architecture great.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 18th December 2015 at 16:48

Danny; if you had turned the camera slightly left, the Bickershaw colliery headgear pulley, which is outside The Wheel Restaurant, would have been on the photo.

The open debate. A modern Wigan or a Wigan we once knew.

Comment by: Cyril on 18th December 2015 at 19:07

Too true Den S, it's even worse than the oversized greenhouse that was built on the end of Rushton's, and they demolished very nice period buildings to put that up too, see Rachel's photo of yesterday and compare the photos of the same buildings in the Album - Streets - Newmarket Street.

If it was a rusty old bike wheel that was on show Mick would have been happy for it to have remained in situ.

Must agree with what prince charles once said about the modern buildings of today they lack character soul, and any beauty unlike Victorian structures of ,but then in wigan we knock them down and replace them with ugly monstrositys .

Well said Alan and Peter

Comment by: Mary on 19th December 2015 at 00:18

Alan , Put the wheel back? The Wigan we once knew is going fast, no matter how hard we all try and dig our heels in.. it's called progress and economics. Give me the old Wigan any day, but such is reality!!

Comment by: Mick on 19th December 2015 at 16:26

Mary would you want some Rickets throwing in as well

Comment by: David on 24th December 2015 at 21:32

Mick, do you practice at being so stupid?
