Mercure Wigan Oak Hotel
Nice pic Mick, was this the Quality Inn originally?
nice looking building. I'm just guessing is it situated on Bridgeman terrace
When, and where, did that go up ?
I left Wigan 20 years ago and it wasn't there then. Or did I just not notice it ?
Derek
Greenough street opposite the old central park (now supermarket).
Full of foriegners etc claiming benefits
I've stayed there a few times. Nice rooms and friendly staff and very convenient for town.
Bob - can't say I noticed "foreigners on benefits". Some nice Germans once and another time a wedding party and once the whole of Whitehaven rugby team for some reason.
I think it's been there about 20 years.
Until a few months ago the flags were an absolute disgrace, and had been for a long time, filthy dirty and ragged ,it was a bone of contention every time I passed ,it reflected badly on The Hotel and Wigan . Eventually I rang the manager ,Mr.Jackman, who was a gentleman ,and said he would look into the matter ,I'm quite sure he was unaware of the state of the insignia ,as he would enter from the opposite side of the building . To his credit the the flags were removed the following day ,and new ones replaced recently . It shows that a telephone call (in a friendly manner) can sometimes work to improve things.
Well,I was having trouble finding this location, good thing there's google maps to relie on.
Was it originally called Oak Hotel, can't recall that name or that it dominated the roadside that much.
Need to visit Wigan more often (if I can still recognize the place)
good picture nice one bob you have just told the truth what you said i agree with you just like nigel faradge
Was in Wigan last weekend and stayed there, not for the first time. Staff helpful and polite. No sign of "foreigners on benefits". Had mother's wake there a couple of years ago and couldn't fault the price or the service. And free parking.
Building this hotel started in late 1990. It was called The Oak originally. I think the person who commented on it being occupied with foreigners on benefits might be confusing it with The Britannia on Almond Brook Road, Standish where this is or was certainly the case until recently.
For ex. Wiganers who haven't been back for a long time,Its on the site of the old WATER HEYES buildings at the side of the River Douglas, eaiih just behind the Wigan Little Theatre
