Just what does it take to get access to the Parish Church tower?

Comment by: Alan (on Vancouver Island) on 24th March 2015 at 01:14

I have absolutely no recollection of Wigan Hall. What, and where, is it ?
Good photo of old and new.

There are 17 photo`s in :- Photos of Wigan, New Gallery, Wigan Hall/Rectory, all submitted by Brian. When were these taken Brian?
This would have been taken from Wigan Parish Church tower, no doubt, Andrew?
The TransPennine train appears to be going downhill!
Wigan Cricket Club and Wigan Subscription are in the background.

Brian; Silly Me! The date is in the description -- December 2006.

Welcome back Andrew, cracking shot and can guess where from.

Think it's a Northern train.

This looks as it was taken this year, the trees are cleared and now you can see contractors working in the grounds.

Well taken, Andrew... pity the train was going a bit too fast for you, though. ;-)

Alan has you walk down New Market St towards Frog lane. Wigan College will be on your right. Just past the college is a large brick wall with a double gate set into this, Behind this wall is the house.

Youv got a lot on there Andrew even a passing train.

I was stood out side Wigan Parish Church on Sunday morning looking up at the tower as the bells started clanging, I think they need retuning or else get some better bell ringers.

Mick; my knowledge of Campanology (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campanology ) is infinitesimal; wonder if they are short of bellringers. BTW how accurate was the church clock?
sd; the train is a TransPennine which goes to Manchester Airport. After it leaves Wigan NW the first stop is Manchester Oxford Road, then Manchester Piccadilly.

Alan, it is more commonly known as The Wigan Parish Church Rectory. If you haven't been back home recently i'll explain in 'old money', you would go down Market St past the old Market Square, turn left at the crossroads into New Market St which leads to Frog Lane, the rectory is on the right about 200 yards down, not easy to see until recently, it's behind a high wall and large gates, the wall is being taken down and rebuilt at the moment, so a lot of Wigan people are seeing something they haven't seen properly before. What was All Saints Secondary Modern School and now is The Deanery High School is about another 100 or so yards further down on Frog Lane.

Thanks folks :-)

Mick, I know what you mean about the bells - I think it is because it is Lent at the mo. Pop down on Easter Day and it will be very different!

I wrote to the company that now owns the hall asking for permission to photograph it before and following the development work in exchange for copyright free use of the images. Sadly, I did't receive a response!

David, the train was meant to be blurred to give the impression of movement - does it just look daft?
