shouldn't the powers that be have taken the opportunity to widen the road here and get rid of one of the worst roadblocks in the town?

Comment by: Ken R on 13th February 2015 at 00:50

Looks sleek and clean lined, but where is the wheel, it actually a pulley not a wheel.

Comment by: alan lad on 13th February 2015 at 07:55

The wheel /pulley has been stuffed out of clear sight for some unknown reason, maybe out of fashion in the eyes of some new kid in the planning dept .

Comment by: Aubrey on 13th February 2015 at 08:08

Ken R,
The wheel, or pulley, is at the far left of the photo on the wall of the restaurant.

Modernistic and uninspiring!!

Comment by: Rev David Long on 13th February 2015 at 08:58

Well, I can see the wheel quite clearly. It could have returned more or less to its former position - and given even more prominence, perhaps, if it had been made a feature of the space behind the Wigan & Leigh College sign. There's a support which goes between the inner wall, above the windows, and the outer wall on which it could have been suspended.
But perhaps they're trying to get away from the history of the college.

The wheel is now on the Frog Lane side of the building - as can be seen on the left of the photo.

How many times has this site in Wigan been revamped/redeveloped?

Comment by: Alan H on 13th February 2015 at 10:48

Carol, it's New Market Street, Frog Lane is further down the road.

What is taught here? Does it have any similarity to the former Tech? My brother gained his BSc at the age of 20 there, unusual even today.

Comment by: banksy on 13th February 2015 at 14:37

Was there a piece of winding rope over the pulley when it was located in front of the tech?

Comment by: Aubrey on 13th February 2015 at 14:59

Magpie,
As the college is no longer a Mining & Technical College it would appear all subjects are available, but, having briefly checked the choices I couldn't find mining, not surprisingly.

Comment by: Aubrey on 13th February 2015 at 15:15

Maggie,
Sorry but my i.pad incorrectly altered your name. I assure you I did not type Magpie, but I did fail to check the name.

Comment by: Aubrey on 13th February 2015 at 17:02

Banksy,
Yes you are right, there was a winding rope attached.

A.W. This site has now been developed twice. Once when the original college was built and just now in 2015 for this new building.

I was there 75-77 doing OND Sciences. I didn't know that new market st went across the juncion. I just assumed it was all Frog Lane. The Pear Tree was our 'local'. Made a change from canteen food at lunchtime.

Thanks Peterp, it seems there were few comments made to P a D then.

The wheel is in front of The Wheel Restaurant, but not quite as prominent as its original position.
