Photo-a-Day (Saturday, 25th October, 2014)
Tec
Photo: Simon Fairhurst (iPhone 6)
I dont see the point of that photo, unless you want to show us you have the I phone 6, it doesnt seem to take good informative snaps
I agree aitch, a non informative photo probably taken though a car window, plus the wheel was 50 yards up the road.
Anyone know why this building has replaced a much larger one?
Aitch it might not be the best of photos but you have to remember this isnt a photo competition.
Photo-a-Day is to show what Wigan looked like on that particular day, and for them who dont get out and about to much this shows the work being done on the new Wigan Tec extension.
That's where the steps up to the front entrance of the Tech used to be when I was there mid 70's it was a large open space. The wheel would have been on the area on the far left of the picture??
The sort of photos that will gain worth over time. Nicely documented for us - thanks Simon :)
Ernest I think the much larger building was a big open space gym,the new one is two floors with what look to be different rooms
Mick,
I believe the gym was round the corner where the restaurant, and wheel, now are.
Isn't the new building on the site of the previous entrance to the tech.?
Another square box with no character. Just what Wigan needed.
Hope they bring the wheel back from it's hideaway and put it back where it belongs.
Interesting picture which has provoked debate about where the wheel was or wasn't. Maybe not a picture competition, but one about local knowledge (or lack of).
Which is nice. Well done, Simon.
Maybe aitch and jonno would like to submit their photos.
Nice one Simon.
Carol, you are right, the wheel used be before the lamp post on the left of the picture. It's clearly visible on Google Street View (Image Oct 2012).
Nice photo, Simon.
Is that Frog Lane on the left?
Aubrey, you're right......the restaurant is where the gym was.....the new build replaces the large sports hall and surrounding area
Boring! the building I mean.
Fred, the street where the lamp post is, on the left, is New Market St, which becomes Frog Lane after the junction with Hallgate.
Who wants to see boring buildings anyway.
Cheers, Neil..!!
The wheel is just round the corner from the view on the photo and it's just in front of The Wheel Restaurant.
Had a very nice meal there the other day. It was a French Theme night. Beautiful food prepared, cooked and served by students at the Tech.
I`m amazed at all the comments re previous position of Bickershaw Colliery No. 4 headgear pulley (wheel). Simon has stated in caption that it was situated here.
This building is on the corner of Parsons Walk and New Market St.
There are several P-a-D`s showing where the headgear pulley was. Use Search Box above.
Well done, Simon.
What ' wheel ' are we talking about ?
It will be an interesting photo some years down the line, just like the photos of Wigan we see taken by people in the 70/80's.
I have to agree its another boring looking building but must serve its purpose.
Helen, go to Photo-a-Day Feb 21st 2014.
I don't think it's a new building in itself .... it's an extension / remodelling at the front, but probably totally new at the side on Frog Lane where the gym was.
Carol that building is brand spanking new.
Thanks Roy....The Wheel looks more interesting than the building !
So is the front entrance with the steps (I know that bit has changed to a closed bit) still there, and this is to the left of that bit, going over where the wheel was. If you look from the corner of Mesnes Park Terrace towards the tech, I spent much of my time for 2 years in the labs and library on that side of the building, at the top. Lovely views!
